Hi last night my horse got herself cast and struggled to get up as she was at such an awkward angle. With help from some people i managed to get lungelines on her legs and when we started to pull she started to kick. It scared the life out of me when i found her i thought she was dead!
I know she has been rolling in her stable quite a lot as she is on box rest and been in for 10 weeks she is happy to stay in she has just picked up the habit of rolling as soon as i muck out and it doesn't matter if i put new straw in or not and she does it morning or evening. I feed her while i muck out and then give her hay straight away to try and distract her but she still wants to roll! She is on a straw bed with massive banks but that didn't seem to help.
I was going to buy an anti cast roller today but is this something i can keep on all day everyday as i dont know when she might decide to roll?
It scared the life out of me and i dont want it to happen again as she still has a good few weeks left on box rest!

My Friends horse used to get cast frequently - even with big banks and she found the best thing was to remove the banks and screw anti-cast strips to the wall - basically two fencing rails across each wall the first one at about 2 foot from the ground and the second about a foot and a half above that... distances depend on the size of the horse... he didn't get cast after that...

I think its ok to keep an anti cast roller on all day - they are quite an old school design from back in the days of jute rugs etc can you take her for a roll in hand in the school ? get it out of her system

Agree about rolling in hand. Share horsey really isn't happy without a(n ideally rug free) roll every day. Luckily he never (touch wood!) gets cast but I think it would be a shame to prevent your girl rolling at all.

I would love to take her out in hand but where she has been in for so long she is actually dangerous to get out and had to give her ACP for the vet the other day. She is so happy in her stable and never used to do this and to be honest never did in the field that much so i'm clueless!
Thanks for your help tho x

We have two on our yard that get cast, the owners have made banks out of all the wet dirty straw so they are reasonably solid and this seems to stop him getting cast as at 5am I am the first and only one on the yard and it was very difficult to get them up on my own and this seems to have stopped the problem we did leave an anti-cast roller on one of them all the time until the banks were high enough and made sure we had a polypad underneath and this never caused him a problem.
