Hello

My rottie boy is now 18 months old and now is the time to have his doodies snipped off - vet wanted me to wait a while longer than 12 months he said that if you snip them off too soon some dogs can stay quite adolesent like all their lives.

So anyway - he is very quiet and placid - very obiedient and very good around bitches and 100% non agressive and no way dominant.

Vet has mentioned that if he is ok and I will make sure he doesnt accidentally mate - I might as well leave him with his balls on.

Thing is - I am never going to breed from him so he doesnt need them? Is it not abit mean to leave them on if he is never going to use them?

Do you think I should get him castrated ?

Thoughts and thankies

We neutered ours in an attempt to calm hiim down...didnt work

but you dont have that problem...

if he definately cant get out and accidently mate then id say leave them...

but them theres cancer etc to think about

not much help i guess!

All mine are done and I would have never used them for breeding either.....none had any behavioural problems its just personal choice....I have seen the effects of cancers related to not neutering, and all my dogs have lived to a ripe old age, with no major health problems.....and I have no less than 10 at a time

...lol

it is personal choice

Does prove the point that not all vets tell u to neuter...for the money...as alot of people seem to think

Yes Cala - thanks - I do think you are right about the cancer thing - and I will be neutering

As for the post on here that someone commented ' there are enough dogs to resue as it is' or something along those lines .... I think that is a very rude thing to say - I would always make sure that if he ever were to get out and mate (which he cannot) I would fully support the bitches owners and make sure all puppies were found super homes. That was a totally inapropriate comment ans very upsetting.

That was me and I DONT think it was at all rude or inaproproate to say on a thread asking opinions on castration.

I have had(on nowhere near as large scale as Cala) plenty of dogs end up with me -most have been from good lines and good breeders but for one reason or another have been passed from home to home through no fault of their own.
The thing is, although I am sure YOU would do your best to find good homes for pups you can never garentee that the person who takes them on wont pass them on down the line.
Maybe they move house, maybe they take a pay cut/are made redundent maybe they have a baby and the dog doesnt adjust- you can always say you would happily take the dog back, but we could be talking years down the line and they might have lost your contact details.
The dog then ends up in rescue.

My yorkie escaped once years ago- garden was more then secure enough for GSD's but the window cleaner broke one while we were all out at work/school and out he went.
Took a week to find him franticly calling everywhere everyday and out looking for him,if he hadnt been castrated he COULD have mated in that time.We wouldnt have known about it let alone have been able to take on joint responsability any pups.

End of the day, an entire dog can breed a castrated one cant- that is always a facter in the decision to castrate or not.

Thats a very good point actually....I suppose if an un-castrated dog got out unsupervised....ulike a bitch...there is absoloutley no way of telling if he has indeed done the deed

I had my English Springer Spaniel castrated as I didnt want to breed from him and I felt a responsibilty as his owner to be able to have him safely off the lead knowing he wasnt going to harrass some poor lady!

The vet said if we wanted a stockier looking dog leave him as long as we could. She didnt gaurantee that he would be better behaved so we waited as long as we could before he had it done. However, I did see a difference in my dogs behaviour after a little while.

Would I get my next dog castrated? I'm not too sure..I think if he is okay, I would try and leave him entire.

My black lab still has his bits...hes 8 now. We have never used him to breed and never will. He acts no differently to a dog that has been castrated. he lives wth a bitch. he can't get out. He has been around bitches in season and he just plays with them as he would any other dog ( i think he might be gay!!!)

My old black lab that lived to the grand old age of 15 was never castrated and he was exactly the same as the one i have now.

To be honest i don't think i would get a dog castrated unless he needed to be for behaviour reasons.

if you do go ahead and have him done then be prepared to drastically cut down on his food intake and increase the amount of excercise he has if he is not to resemble a barrel on legs

- neuterred dogs can have HUGE weight problems.

My vet also mentioned this to me although my dog has not gained any further weight than normal after his castration. Plenty of excercise helps!

Stella was spayed at six months, and has actually lost weight over the years. She was a porker as a pup and thinned out considerably after about thirteen months. With a good amount of exercise, your dog will stay trim.

Agree with u both....a neutered dog will only gain overly excess weight when neutered if feed excessivly or denied appropriate exercise.....I have never had an over weight dog...and as everyone can see I have a multitude of different breeds and sizes

Ah thanks - guys !

He is a very big boy at the mo so the weight thing would be something to consider - he is about 8 stone and 31 inches in height but he is very slim - I only feed him a jug of dry mix a day and a chub - most people dont think he is a rottie as he is quite sleak. He definatly cant get to other dogs and we only ever let him off the lead if I take him for early walks 6am and then he is great to call back - I will give him a few more months and mull this over - xxxxxx
