Has anyone got any experience with this?
I know some horses lose their stallion tendancies and some dont.
The horse I`m looking at is a five year old and has been used at stud.
Is he likely to keep wanting fun times with mares or would it be safer not to turn out with mares at all?
I know it takes time for the testosterone to simmer down.

I would play it by ear - leave a good 6 months to a year to calm down in a bachelor herd, then try him in a field next to mares, preferably winter time when things aren't in season and everything so hyped up, with good fencing too! - and supervised all the time of course just to see how he reacts and go from there.
I've had a 10yr old breeding stallion gelded as we were no longer using him for breeding, we didn't want to risk selling him to someone who was going to stable him 24/7 as he was used to running with mares and foals! We didn't notice any change in his temperament as he was such a sweetie anyway but he wasn't interested in the girls at all - they did try and tempt him with bums shoved in his face while he was grazing but he just wasn't interested at all! On the other hand I have a stallion I gelded as a rising 5yr old - never covered a mare or been out with any since he was a foal - and he will quite happily cover the mares now if turned out with them, so he just stays with the boys herd as I don't want him injuring himself or the mares, we did have another the same as him many years ago and he would cover mares given the chance even years after being gelded, so really does depend on the individual.

Thanks :)
I figured it could be a difference between them, a stallion at my old RS was used for covering mares, was a bit bolshy and very stallion like, was gelded at 8 and is now the calmest most chilled out dude you could meet. My old Sec D was gelded at 3 and is still the biggest A hole ever at 18 :D

I`ll just have a think about it...only really interested as he is full brother to one of my mares and he looks pretty chilled out and a nice sort.
