Castration costs?

Don't know if this is a daft question or not but does the cost of castration vary between vets? Ours quoted in the region of £130 for the border collie and £110 for the terrier cross. We were considering changing to a vets who are much closer to home than the ones we currently use, but thought it would be cheeky to ring and ask what they charge before moving?!

Never had to send a dog for castration before (1st time owner) so no idea what the average costs is!

Does go on weight at our practice. Doesn't sound expensive to me. Ours ranges from 130-190 depending on size xx

Tends to go on weight so your collie is always going to be more than the terrier. If you're intending on moving to them anyway then no I don't think it's cheeky at all to ring the potential new vets to ask about castration costs. Whilst you're at it ask what that price includes. These days it ought to have sedation, all anesthetic and surgical costs, an injection of an anti-inflammatory plus tablets to go home, a collar to stop him licking and all his post op checks. Some places will just give you a basic neutering price that sounds cheap but then things like tablets to go home on and the collar will be extra so I'd advise you to get them to spell out exactly what their quote covers and what to expect. Prices can vary according to area so what seems expensive in one part of the country is actually relatively cheap elsewhere.

That sounds expensive, can't remember off top of my head what we charge but our small bitch spay (which would be terrier size) is only £100 so castration would certainly be less than that.

I sent my Dobermann to another vet to be neutered because they were so much cheaper, I rang around a lot of vets and were shocked at the difference in prices. My dogs case was more complicated because we didnt know his VWD status but when ringing up for quotes they just wanted his weight which was 40kg. I think I paid about £160 about 2years ago so I would advise you to ring around.

My Mum just had her lab castrated, on Thursday, and she paid £110.

Phone around. My usual vets were £140. The vets closer to home (that also come highly recommended) were about £85. This was for a smallish Border Terrier.

They both went on weight too but some are just more expensive than others.

With the dog I do call around for quotes on price, for his jags for instance my vets (the cheaper of the two above) wanted £40, the animal shelter £25 and the new Pets at Home in store vet were on offer for £15!
