I've just purchased a 2 y/o colt which im planning on castrating.
He is still with original owner so i am debating on having her castrate him or whether to do it myself.
Only problem is, both me and her have grazing and so no real clean safe areas, so im unsure where to have him done? And any complications having him done in a field will have, and if he would have to be stabled at all after the castration?

Also i have already gone over budget on the horse, by about £400 so really im wanting to have him done as cheap as possible, but obviously with a reputable safe vet, anyone know of a cheapish vet in Essex area?

Can't help with recommending a vet as too far away but having him gelded out in a field shouldn't cause too many problem. As for the actual procedure as long as he has somewhere seperate (sp?) to recover from the anaesthetic he should be fine. A fenced off area perhaps?

My ym had his 2 yr old gelded recently and kept him apart from the main herd for a couple of days to recover and allow the healing to start before turning him back out. Had no problems at all as being allowed to walk about in his little paddock stopped any swelling that may have occurred from being stood still

Good luck with your new youngster :D

I had my 2 yr old done last Oct and it cost around £190 inc call out, bute and antibiotics. I had to keep him in for 24 hrs and then out for 3 weeks to help with swelling.

I used blaircourt near woodham ferrers, you can take them there as well which may suit you (if journey isn't too long). maybe give them a call and see what options they suggest.

Had my colt done at 20 months .He was done in the field and turned out as soon as the sedation had worn off .The vet said he would be better turned out and walking about than stabled .
He was fine by that evening ready to eat his tea .Keeping him walking about reduced any swelling to a minimum.
The cost was just under £200 .This included sedation for his Mum who kept calling to him and distracting him!!!!

Where abouts in Essex are you? Some excellent vets on the Essex Suffolk border I would recommend.
Sadly you cannot put a monetory value on the quality of work and nothing is ever guranteed. I was quoted £140 to geld my chap last year. He also had a small umbilical hernia that needed to be dealt with at the same time, therefore he had to got into hospital and was quoted £750 for the whole proceedure inc drugs etc. Then the bill came through!!!! £1467. I was angry as had been told it would be so much less, but I would have paid a lot more to have the outcome we did - with excellent aftercare.
