Stan is booked in to have his dangleberries removed next week and I am a nervous wreck. I have already moved it back a week because he's been on anti-biotics after he got attacked, and I keep having to talk myself out of moving it back again (or just cancelling it all together). It doesn't help that OH is pestering me to let him produce babies (which is not happening!).

I am really worried about him going in and having it done, and also a bit worried that he won't be the same little Stan afterwards :(

Some reassurance, and perhaps a kick up the backside, would be much appreciated. How long does it normally take for them to recover? how risky is it? does it change their personalities? how long does he have to wear the collar of shame for?

Thank you.

I was exactly the same with mine!

He'll be fine though and i've noticed no change in their personalities at all

Don't put it off, for his sake, get it done then you won't have the worry of 'accidents' or health problems in that area :)

Hector didn't need a collar at all, didn't even bother with himself at all. Pads wore his until stitches were removed 7 days later.

After taking them for a toilet break and feeding, both zonked and slept until the following morning then were back to normal the following day.

hi, i feel for you. my dog was very ill in the vets when he had to have his removed. he had a prostate problem that at the time they couldnt say if he would get over and that removing this bits could help. it was so stressful and i think i rang the vets every half hour to find out what was going on. however he was fine and the fact that he (like yours) was already on anti b's helped.he had less chance of any infection. the stitches healed very fast and he didnt pay them any attention.he was still ill at that point. happily all is now well and its calmed him down alot. the only real change is he get a curly coat now. but i can live with that. the sooner you get it done the faster you and your boy can get over it.
best of luck:D

He will be fine and probably not even notice they gone !
Bob was done about 6 weeks ago is is the same lively terrorist he was before (unfortuantely ;-)..)!
He was quite naughty with his stitches and managed to get 1st out by 3rd day, 2nd by 4th day and had to go back on the 5th day and be stapled together! But thats just cos he a little bugger.....i'm sure Stan is much better behaved!!!

He will have to wear a collar for a short time but please don't worry. I can't actually say I have noticed any change in behaviour at all (not in a bad way). He was done at about 18 months. He is a lot less bolshy other dogs (but that is also through training, maturity etc so can't put it down to just that) and takes less urinary infections, which he used to get a lot.

I know exactly how you feel. I have just booked my bitch in for spaying and am now feeling quite pathetic as I am worrying so much.
The sensible part of me tells me not to worry and that it is the right thing to do but I just can't help it.

Deep breaths I think until she is back home safe.

With my own dogs, of which I msut have had 30 at one time or another between me and OH, I have had them all done, all recovered in days, esp males, as soon as the anaesthetic wears off they are fine, NEVER changed any of mine or the hundreds we neuter in a year with the rescue and we have never lost a dog or had any bad experiences, dont stress, he will only be knocked out 20 mins if that:D

Thanks folks, am feeling a bit better now, I just hope all goes smoothly and he's OK. I know I am just being a bit extra neurotic after he got attacked last week, made me realise how much the little monster has taken over my life :)

I took one of the rescue bassets for his "brain surgery" on Tuesday.

To look at him now you wouldn't know he'd had anything done and his biggest problem was missing two meals. The wound is clean and swelling nearly gone. He had pain meds to today.

He has dissolving sutures and will be going to his new home on Saturday.

(That leaves just one to rehome - 10 month old, huge, male anyone?)
