Hi

Im having my 22 month old colt gelded soon (8-3-2010). Just wanted to know if anyone has any tips to make it the least stressfull and painful for him as possible or anyways on how to speed recovery/prevent infections?
All opinions apreciated

You should be ok as long as there is not too much mud around, I had my boy gelded last Aug and our major problems was going to be flies but with plenty of fly spray he was ok no probs at all.

Leave him out so that he can walk around and doesst stiff, your vet should tell you the same.

I agree with Casanova on this one.

Give him as much turnout as you can after he's come round from the sedation as it helps reduce any swelling etc. Daughter is getting her 10 month old colt gelded but we are waiting til April when hopefully our mud should have dried up a lot by then

Get hold of some arnica 200c from a homeopath or homeopathic vet (about £6.00), use it for the day before the op and then a few days after, this will make a huge difference to the swelling (which is the main source of discomfort). You could also use aconite for the day after op to help the lad recover from the shock of it all. Agree with turnout, as much as possible, again to help with swelling. You can use both of these with any other meds as they won't react or cause a reaction.

Thank you everyone, I have heard about arnica before, but got very confused when I looked for it, can you buy a cream or can u dilute the tablets in water and feed it?

Sorry I prob sound really stupid

I am lucky we have stables with large hard staning in front so mud will not be a problem

Thanks

We got spray of both from homoeopathic vets for the cockerels that were injured by fox and will use those in future but I have used pills in past and just drop them from the lid inside the lip so they sit between lip and gum. You can't buy 200c in the chemists I don't think but I have always had good results with the 6 and 30c ones in the past.
