Hello,

Ive just had my yearling colt gelded and was expecting quite a hefty bill for it!
My friend had her colt done a couple of weeks before using a different vet and it totalled to around £150 incl antibiotics etc. So naturally I was beginning to think mine would be around the same price.

How wrong was I!! I nearly fainted when I opened the bill...

Sooo out of interest for those who have had their colts castrated, how much have you had to pay??

Also another question, my boy has a bit of the vascule sp? sack hanging from the wound. I am told it sometimes happens and it should shrivel up and go back in... The question is how long should it take before you should start worrying??

Thank in advance xxxx

Please do...

Errr lets just say mine was slightly more than your quote....

I'll be expecting mine to be just over £200 as he'll be passported at the same time and might have Bears teeth done too which obviously will make it more.

Go on how much?

have colts cut regularly...

were yours "local" or "general"?

mine are all done standing with local..£160 all in.

One of the best vets down here in Cornwall has just put its call out fee up to either £80 or £90! my friend had them out on friday but luckily as they were doing another visit near her they halved it between the 2 of them, I shant be using them!!!

I had a shetland gelded a couple of years ago. The vet was brilliant & used a general anaesthetic. The bill was £150-160.
He did it in the blinding snow in the field - what a great vet!

thats expensive. did he get an infection or something? have you checked that they have not charged you twice for something i had that on my last vets bill

Nope theres nothing charged twice, he didnt get an infection, he was only done on friday!!

I did however have a vaccination but this shows up as only £24.05...

I have thought about querying it.. but obviously wasnt sure on the going rate of castrations especially from my vet.

I would be on the phone now !!

My god thats daylight robbery!!!!!!!
I paid £80 standing up. He wouldn't drop the left one at first so had a 'bit hanging' which I hibiscrubed every day. You need to worry if intestine comes out. My boy was sore for a few weeks but its healed up fine, he has a larger lump there than usual. I took photos of it on my phone to check back on.

) for £75.
Would expect around the £150 mark, not nearly £400!!

I was worried about whether the bit hanging was intestine but vet was convinced it was vascule sack which was filled with blood... That said I took the whole day off work to spend with him because I was worried that it was intestine!

Vet has advised not to touch it, but to spray blue spray on it and let it heal... The bit hanging is raw flesh and im scared to death to turn him out incase he get mud up there and ends up with an infection. Especially now after the bill!!!

I paid less than that for microchip, 2 stage vetting, first of his jabs and gelding - and he had to be done under a GA, had bute and two lots of antibotics.

Think the gelding itself was about £180 - maybe I got a discount as having the whole lot done at once?

I hope that he had the decency to have his testicles platinum plated and mounted in a crystal display case for you! MY good God, that is daylight robbery

. What would they charge for a colic op????? Bloody thieves, the actual cost in medicines etc is a pittance, most of the rest is a p*ss take

What? Who? (so I can avoid them!!) Can you PM it to me please? Thanks. We've only got three decent horse vets!!

That's more than daylight robbery, it's a bank job!

If they haven't made a mistake is there any chance they think it would be through your insurance (I don't have vet cover so don't know if that's included or not) so have put the noughts on?

I had a colt castrated a couple of years ago and some tissue prolapsed through the wound, it was just fatty tissue and the vet simply cut it off rather than wait for it to shrivel up. Sounds horrible but the pony was sedated as he was a bit stressy anyway and appeared not to feel a thing. The vet said he preferred to cut it off rather than let it shrivel up as there was less chance of infection. Think the bill for him (with the repeat visit) was around £250
