Hi, have moved house 3 weeks ago. My boys are 8 years old. They have moved several times and are very good with litter tray. I have just had a cat flap fitted in new place today.

However for the past couple of days, one of my cats has taken to peeing in the beanbag!!!!!!!! Today I come home to find my sofa (leather) had been peed on! My house now stinks of cat pee!!!!

Any ideas on how to stop him peeing on everything?? They are not shy cats at all and I have not done anything new and as said they have moved before and have settled here really well, so why all the peeing?

Argh, please help. cat pee really reeks!

thanks

Are you still using the same make / type of litter in the tray? I know with my gang that if I use a different brand, they get very sniffy about it - and its at times like that they will do "naughties" outside the litter tray!

Is the bean bag / sofa new?

I know they aren't supposed to like citrus smells, so maybe wipe your sofa with a citrusy disinfectant? (test a bit somewhere discreet first so that you don't wreck your sofa though!!)

Although you say they have moved before, it sounds as though they are just a bit unsettled by this move. I know how frustrating and yucky it can be when you have a cat peeing in the house.

Good luck xx

All furniture is old. But the beanbag was peed on in the old house. I presumed it was neighbours cat who I found in my house several times, but now think it was mine!

I never have a litter tray normally as they have 24/7 access to outside, but whilst waiting for flap, have used litter tray. Same stuff as have used before.

The only thing I am thinking is that the big cat is HUGE! So I dont thing he fits properly in the tray, so the beanbag, beign the same type of feeling as litter makes for a big tray. But why the sofa?

The other cat is fine, I have never caught him peeing anywhere he shouldn't.

The only thing I can think off is that this move has upset them so they are trying to mark their house as " their own" it's quite common for cats that are upset to mark their place

Ah - if the beanbag has been peed on before, and they are upset about the move - then the beanbag will become no1 target for peeing on!! :o I would chuck the beanbag. I had a bed for mine a few years ago that one of the boys took to peeing on - and once he started he would keep on doing it - even after it had been through a hot wash. I never knew why he did it - but the only way I stopped it was to get rid of the bed.

If they aren't used to using a litter tray, I know that "cat people" reckon that cats won't share a litter tray, and that you should have a litter tray per cat if you are puttig trays down, so maybe if they aren't used to using one regularly, then they don't want to share, and it doesn't help that your big chap finds it a bit tight in there.

Fingers crossed that they will be a bit happier now they have access to the outside world x

Id never thought of that. However have seen them both using the tray. The tray will be gone as of tomorrow, so we will see what happens.

Thanks about the info on the bed that got peed on. It will be a shame to lose my beanbags, but I guess it is a small price to pay for a non cat pee house!

Do I get a new sofa too?????? ;)

It's a tricky one because cats are quite sensitive and sometimes just do things to irritate you! I would recommend that you restrict their movements a little- maybe one or two rooms, get a bigger litter tray and make sure it's kept thoroughly clean (I know you will, but just sayin!). Try using "Feliway" spray or plug in, if they are doing it due to stress this should calm them sufficiently. Also, give them a bit more attention than usual, they may be playing up because you're busy unpacking boxes! Best of luck, cat pee is yuck :(

Re the litter trays - I have 5 cats, and 2 litter trays (mainly because 1 cat is v. v. nervy and will only leave the house under the cover of darkness and another cat is blind and doesn't leave the house at all!) - and all 5 cats will use either of the litter trays occasionally. So they will share if needs be, but it may be that they have both used the trays, but your big chap finds it awkward, and if he is out of sorts from moving anyway, you'll end up with accidents - that's usually how it goes with our lot anyway!

Yes - a bit of a nuisance about your beanbags - but TBH you will probably never get the smell out of them - they would just keep wafting stinks out every now and again!! *pukey face here*... :)

Yes - definitely need a new sofa too.... :D :D
