I am most definitely not looking to dress the cat up for Christmas. :D:D:D:D

a short coat female about 14 or even more. Lived as a feral due to unfortunate circumstances but now lives with me, is very easy to handle and currently lives on an open cat bed shut in my old lorry container and it's cold and she is old.

she would be unhappy coming into the house there is no way her accommodation can be changed and she is very happy with it.

I am looking at ways to keep her warmer possibly a cat coat or a cat cave/nest or both.

Any got one, tried any, any recommendations please? I have never even considered putting a coat on a cat before.

I have considered making a bed but would just rather buy something that will work well.

Ferals and cats who live outside shouldn’t have man made beds or towels as they trap moisture in the material which makes the cat even colder. Good old fashioned straw is the best insulator. My feral lives in the hay barn while the two official yard cats sleep in the stables even though they have beds in the kitchen. The older yard cat has stopped roughing it and moved into the house and now sleeps on the sofa 😁

Just thought - how about a rechargeable heated bed? Just looked at Google and there are plenty to choose from. Perhaps more than one so that you always have one ready to go

I had heard about fabric not being ideal outside but recently got the kitten a Wooly Cave, which are felted wool and so might get around that problem. His is inside, though. It gets pretty toasty in there with him. Only problem is the price, particularly if it's never used.... https://woolycave.com/
those are lovely and wool should breathe. Although she is "outside" the container is totally dry, I have slept in it many times! She is totally dry at all times (she doesn't go out) but the air temperature is very cold.

thank you for the replies. I hadn't thought of a cat coat trapping moisture and making her cold. Glad I asked as I have no experience and it clearly shows. :D:D

In the light of some of the comments I am going to start by trying to make a hay bale tunnel and hay bale roof and fill it with hay tomorrow.

I am a bit panicky as I lost her daughter last week who lived in my hay shed. She didn't die of the cold but of a serious problem but she was cold and mum is a lot older.

There's modern cat houses for outdoor use with sort of built in heaters, which I presume would prevent trapping any potential moisture from wet cat. E.g.

The cats here have a wide selection of sleeping quarters. Straw lined boxes are a favourite. The Pets At Home cat cave is ignored.
They do sweat a lot in their beds so straw is changed weekly.

I made this for outside the back door.
A sturdy cardboard box, covered in a bin bag, lined with a sheet of polystyrene, air holes in the side and topped up with straw.
The straw is changed weekly/as needed. There was an additional sheet of poly under the box but Faramir's friends thought that was something to play with.

In the stable barn I have builder's bags filled with straw. They love these as they can snuggle down deep in in the straw.
Another favourite is an upturned fleece lined travel boot. 🤣

Even a cardboard box lined with hay will be cosy. Bought my Hooligan Cat an igloo bed. He considered it for half an hour before cautiously approaching it, put both front feet inside and had a sniff, then caught a claw in the cushion as he reversed out. The bed tipped up and pounced on him as he pulled away, and that was that. The killer bed was avoided after that and was given away.
