Cat defending me

Was on the phone to my farrier booking an appointment and having a chat this evening. Husband walked into the room and made some smart comment about me to the farrier-Shadow jumped up and bit him. How I laughed!!!????

When my horse had colic the other morning I walked him in the rain from 6.45am to 8.10am when the vet arrived. The little feral cat walked alongside him all the time. They definitely put themselves in the role of guardian I think.

My last cat and my dog both grew up together, and got along really well. When they were both around 8, my partner came into our lives. His parents have a golden retriever, and we would’ve gone on walk dates with the dogs, who also got on well.

One day, we all came back to my house after a walk, and the dogs were sniffing around the back yard together, while we sat outside. Out of nowhere, my cat comes hurtling down the garden, fully fluffed up, bristling with fury, and headed straight for my partner’s retriever. If I hadn’t happened to be in his beeline, and able to scoop him up and clutch him frantically squirming against me, he would’ve made hard and fast contact.

To this day, I’m still not sure whether the retriever would’ve eaten my cat, or if the dog would’ve submitted to being beaten up and then died of fright, but knowing that my cat was more than ready and willing to stand up and fight off this huge dog ‘for’ us, is just phenomenal.
