A couple of days ago I came home in the evening to find my cat had died. She seemed happy and healthy in the morning but at some point in the day had vomited a lot of blood and pood a lot. I would say that she had been dead for a good few hours as she was not warm to the touch and had some rigor mortis.

I would really like some idea of what happened to her. We spoke to the vets and they seem to think either poisoning of some sort (rat poison or slug pellets) or a stomach ulcer. She was not a confident cat and didnt go far when out - rarely out of back garden, and was also a very fussy eater. Some other possible symptoms are that a few years ago we found blood in her poo but none since and in the last couple of days their water was being drunk very quickly. She was an excessive cleaner and her poo was always full of hair. Does anyone have any experiences of poisoning or ulcers? or any other suggestions? Thanks

Sounds like poisoning to me, with it being so sudden.
How sad

That is what we thought as she really was fine in the morning. We always encouraged her to go out and explore as she was so timid

My cat died yesterday too, she started being unwell Tuesday evening, staggering around and depressed. She was kept in the vets on a drip and had blood tests. By yesterday morning she was in a coma and she had to be put to sleep. All signs point to poisoning, probably antifreeze, which animals like the taste of and only a couple of sips are fatal. There is not cure.

It is heartbreaking and I just hope it was an accident, maybe someone spilled some somewhere and that it wasn't on purpose as I have 3 more.

My cat died of poisoning several yrs ago, he went very quiet in the morning, cats are known for knowing when they are going to die, he went outside and hid in a hedge, its was a pain becuase i couldn't find him to take him to the vets, though i'm not sure it wld have made much difference. Sorry 4 ur loss

Have heard lots of reports recently about antifreeze poisoning of cats- apparently as above it tastes really sweet and they only need a teaspoon to kill them... There was a report of 6 cats dying in local area... Sorry for your loss its heartbreaking

unfortunately all to commen. anti freeze taste nice to them and the rat/ant etc poisons have molasses in to make them taste good.
there is also something going on in weston-super-mare with a psyco actually delibrately poisoning cats with anti freeze. some people are sick

Oh abbs, I'm so sorry. Poor moggie and poor you. Was she elderly? It certainly does sound like some sort of poisoning, though if your girl was a fussy eater and didn't used to go far, could it have been the feline equivalent of distemper? At least she was at home and you found her little body so you know what happened. You'll probably see her out of the corner of your eye for weeks, or think you hear her footsteps on the stairs. Do you have a pic to share? RIP little moggy. xxx

IM so sorry for your loss- the exact same thing happened to me last year - my girl ( 1 of 2 sisters ) was only 4 years old and like yours had vomited a bit of blood and died. She also had a lot of hair in her poo.

I had an autopsy done. Other than some 'mottling' to her liver and lungs, she was completely normal. Food and hair was in her stomach.

So i will never know - i cant honestly think of anything she could have poisioned herself with , and her sister remains fine to this day..

Thanks for all your replies. I'm still not convinced she poisoned herself - the only thing she liked was tuna fish and turned her nose up at everything else (even chicken!). But it is the most likely thing to have happened. We buried her today and planted a lovely tree on top. xxx

i am so sorry, you must be gutted, poor little cat, i would be devastated to lose one of mine, they mean the world to me
its awful that someone is out there doing this on purpose in weston super mare, hope he dies of poisoning quite frankly
one of my suffered poisoning years ago, she was very fussy about eating and was happy to be indoors and close to home too, but she was very lucky, we got her to the vets in time and she survived for many years later, she was in a real mess though, but thankfully she came home to tell us and we rushed her in, she died last year of old age
again, i am so sorry, rip xxx
