Had a bit of a pants day and to top it off my pussy cat has come in this evening hopping lame. He's very sore in his off fore. He doesn't seem to have any pain in his shoulder which is good so I am assuming it's lower day for the moment. He's eaten his supper and is now sleeping on my bed, so will see how he looks tomorrow. Anyway along with being hopping lame he stinks. It's a funny smell, a cross between fox musk and something else. It almost smells very chemically - very strange. Has anyone experienced this or know where the smell comes from. I've just wiped him down with wet wipes, he's rather p'd off to say the least

Could the smell be badger? Poor pussy,I hope you can get a vets appointment in the morning for a check over,he may need anti -biotics at least.

Check your cat for bites esp on the back of the neck. Mine was attacked by a tomcat a few years ago - she was very traumatised, and it was only our very vigilant vet who found two punctures on the back of her neck. She also smelt naff. Hope yours gets better soon - sadly Holly (mine) is really not very well at the moment.

I do not know if badgers spray?? We do not have any setts around by the house. He hasn't any wounds on him hence waiting to see how he is. He's so greedy that he jumped onto the table to eat his supper and still hopped into the sink to have a drink, even though his water bowl is under the sink. It's just such a horrible smell - he's also refusing to sleep on the tee shirt I popped on my bed so clean linen tomorrow!

So sorry to hear about Holly. I'm having my lab put down next week so had spent the afternoon digging her grave. Not an ideal Sunday arvo and then for pussy cat to come in hopping lame. I did wonder if it was Tom Cat smell. He isn't traumatised at all just hopping lame and stinking. I will have a good go through his coat tomorrow and check him for puncture wounds. I thought whilst he was sleeping, I was best to let him rest. Especially as it means he's not jumping up and down off tables.

Ditto on the tom cat attack as they can be very vicious when they want to be. Also don't rule out that he may have been hit by car too. Does he have any scuff marks on his claws, as that is usually a classic sign. I would take him to the vets tomorrow though for a check up just in case it was either. Because even if it was a fight with a cat then he may have puncture wounds which could later form an abcess, so finding them now and treating with antibiotics should nip infection in the bud.
A tom cat smell is very pungent when they have been fighting, if it was indeed an attack ( is your boy neutered) then the un-neutered cat has most likely sprayed all over him.

I always figure if they are eating and drinking then don't panic.
My cat will attack foxes, particularly if he has his dog nearby for backup,so yours may have had an encounter with a fox.
Many animals spray as a defense mechanism, foxes, badgers, tom cats and stoats would leave their mark(if you have ever had ferrets you would know if the smell was ferret/stoat/weasel.)
All the above could have bitten your cat,in which case infection is a real risk. If you feel increased heat/swelling on the injured limb in the next few days, then get to to vet.
A run in with a car could lead to your cat pi$$ing himself+deisel/exhaust/undercar debris. So check his claws. If they are blunted he may have been in an arguement with a car,so it might be worth a vet check for other injuries.
Apologies for the essay.
I am officially a mad cat lady.
I may have to start wearing purple

Baby is minus his balls. He does still spray though. He definitely hasn't been hit by a car. No scuffs and we live in the middle of nowhere. I have my vet coming out to PTS my lab so we can do a check up at the same time. One of my stable cats was a Tom until he was 6 and his spray didn't smell like this. It's pretty horrendous and gets right up my nose. It's the chemical like smell which is disgusting but we've not been spraying today and it was dark so defo hasn't been playing with tractors and sprayers and we do not wash out the sprayers up here. I'd love a cat cam so I could see what he does get up to.

abitodd - I am a mad cat lady! I also wear purple.... :) Does that mean it's official?!

He doesn't smell of ferret but I have noticed a lot of weasels and stoats around recently. They'd give a bl00dy sharp bite. I watched one hunt and kill a rabbit last winter. It was seriously impressive - I'm not a sadist. Anyway like you've said it's defo not a car accident as he's not distressed other than being lame and stinking! I do wonder if it is a fox, I haven't smelt one around the house recently but they could be back. I totally agree about the if they are eating and drinking not to panic too much. Not sure how well I'll sleep with the stench he's wafting. Just would like to know who's sprayed on him. He hates people (apart from me when I'm bearing gifts or sitting too close to the fire!) - very independent so can rule out foul play.

Hmm - ponies are not a problem as I am a TB person! I did however (through someone on here) get a Dartmoor Hill Pony for my sister to buy for her daughter this week... Does that count? I'm too vain to allow any hair to sprout from anywhere on my face :D Other than my eyebrows of course ;) I do call my cat who lives at the house Baby..... I think that makes me a cat lady!!!

I am very sorry to hear about your dog :( it is very sad when we have to make that decision. I had to make it this year with my favourite and closest cat who I loved dearly and it was very, very hard. Still haven't got over it tbh. I had her cremated individually and had a short ceremony and have her ashes with me. I didn't want to bury her as I don't want to leave her in this **** hole of a house when I am lucky enough to be able to leave it. When I die myself I want her ashes buried with me.
I'm glad to hear that your cat has not been hit by a car though because that was my fear with you saying about the chemical smell.
Has your cat licked himself yet or shown any signs of frothing, or vomiting? It may well be an animal smell from something that has sprayed on him during an attack, or it could be that he has got himself into something he should not have.
Would he tolerate any sort of bathing to try and wash some if off especially as you have said it smells like a chemical smell?
I know fox pee is very strong, worked at a vets years ago and remember the smell. I also have had ferrets so I'm familiar with their smell too. But if you don't think it is either of those then I am puzzled as to what else it could be?
I hope your cat soon recovers from his ordeal though and hugs about your dog ((( ))) x

Thats OK then. Vanity+TBs will probably keep you from the slippery slope..........although the dartmoor pony is a worrying sign. Early onset 'mad cat disease.' has been known to involve any mountain or moorland pony+ of course cats.

Joking aside. Will be thinking of you this week. I had to have the vet visit for our old lab this time last year. Its always tough, even when you know its the right choice. And a sick/smelly cat on top of that is not a great start to the week.

Sorry to hear about your dog - its always a difficult decision to make (((HUGS)))

As for the smelly cat - I'd be inclined to give him a bath as he smells chemical just in case it is a chemical. At least you will be able to dilute the stuff just in case it is toxic. I lost one of my cats after being poisoned and to this day still feel guilty that I didn't get her to the vet earlier as we may have been able to save her - she was poisoned by Anti-freeze.

I rarely worry if they are eating or drinking I did have to take my cat to the vet recently when he developed the most stinking breath - turned out to be a rotting bone wedged in the roof of his mouth.

So sorry to hear about your lab- its a decision i may have to make for Holly fairly soon. Even when you know its right, it is really hard. Hope your cat recovers quickly from whatever has happened.

Thank you guys - really appreciate the thoughts. It has to be one of the hardest things as an animal owner which we have to do. Thankfully my brother came by to help as she's quite a big dog. She's been dining on pasta, garlic bread, cheese etc so is feeling rather pleased with herself. I do not think it hurts to spoil in the last few days.

Pussy Cat has been VERY naughty. He lives up to his name! I shut him in my room as it's warm and he ate his breakfast etc. When I returned he'd escaped! When I wiped him with baby wipes, much to his disgust and claws in my hands, he then smelt how he normally does. I didn't push it and try and do his head etc so that bit was still a bit smelly. I didn't dare smell my linen this morning as it is tummy churning! He leapt off my bed this morning and had a few lame steps so I thought a couple of quiet days in will do him good but he's been downstairs and is sitting on the kitchen table and on the work top. I will see how he is this evening. Thankfully he wasn't frothing when he was cleaning himself as I have seen a cat who's had chemical on his fur do just that. I think he was probably pissed that the attention had been taken from him and on to my Lab. Also that he didn't get any bacon sandwich as I was sharing with her. He even swiped it from my hand.....
Many Thanks again for all your thoughts and help.
