I've just discovered my 5 year old female cat hunched up panting:(, she quickly began to rest her head and her paws then became wobbly, looking like she was going to fall over. She tried to move and had very little use of her back legs. I've rushed her to the vets and he's asked all the usual questions: could she have eaten anything etc She's a housecat

He's keeping her in.

She was absolutely fine all morning, behaving like normal.

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? I'm wondering if she's had a stroke:confused:

Thank you

Oh dear i so sorry to hear that. Strange to come on so sudden for a house cat, my initial thoughts would be she has fallen, or its her thrombosis heart/fluid build up somwhere (the head resting ) sort of makes it seems like she was struggling to breathe, cats usually lie in odd positions when in a state like this to better aid them to breathe. otherwise then panting is also obs connected to stress, so obs along your thinking maybe post seizure.
I hope all is ok.

Thank you for reply.

The vet thinks she might of been stung! He was asking if she could have eaten something poisonous or paracetamol etc We don't have anything like that lying around. She does chase insects but I didn't seen any bees or wasps around this morning.

He's given her a steroid injection and says her symptoms have subsided. He is keeping her in over night though for obs as he says she's still breathing a bit heavy and drooling.

All a bit strange.

Glad to hear your cat is a bit better, like Cayla I thought she may have fallen or run into perhaps a cupboard door. Just a thought do you have house plants? could she perhaps have eaten some leaves or perhaps some cut flowers like Euphorbia which has nasty sap.

I do hope she makes a quick recovery and its going to be that you will never ever know what caused it.

I was wondering about cut flowers or houseplants too.

Another possibility is blue green or red algae (Cyanobacteria). This can occur in unexpected places like plant pot saucers.

Well I've collected her his morning after she's spent the night apparently trying to escape from her cage!

He's provided her with some tablets to take for a week. He says he thinks it's an allergic reaction to something. I've just let her out the carrier and she's still wobbly and walking with her back end a bit low! He said she still has a rattly chest.

So I'll set about searching for something she could have ingested, house plants, Lilies, algae etc

Thanks for all your help :D
