A very skinny, very hungry, very pregnant stray walked into my kitchen last Thursday demanding food. She had 5 kittens on Friday and they're all currently living in my utility room. Mama was full of ticks, which I've gotten rid of, but she also has worms. Is it safe to worm a lactating cat?
TIA :)

Awwhhhh bless you for taking pity on this poor puss and her kit's!!

I don't really know the answer to your question; I'd be inclined to ring up your local vets surgery and/or your local Cats Protection Branch, who'd be only too pleased to advise you. Cats Protection (or indeed the vets) would be able to scan mummy-puss to see if she does belong to someone, and also CP would be able to help with neutering and re-homing the kittens too.

Thanks! Yes, I think I'll pop to the vets in the village later and ask. And yes, will take her to the vets to have her scanned to see if she's chipped, just don't want to upset her at the moment.
I've already recruited help homing the kittens from a local rescue. I'm a bit smitten with mama so, assuming she's not chipped and my cats are happy, I think we'll keep her.
I asked the rescue people about worming and they thought best not but she's full of worms and very skinny so obviously the sooner we get rid of the worms the better.

Vets for advise on momma cat, the kittens can be wormed from 2 weeks, as they will be picking up worm from mummy too.

Good luck, look forward to your updates

Are you and where near South Manchester? I'm looking for a kitten for a farm based home. Well done for rescuing her.

As said she will need a lactating cat safe wormer, but ask vet. Well done you. Shame i was not closer i would take a couple of kittens :)

Hope this works - fur babies at 3 days old.

ycbm - sorry but we're in Normandy :)

Check with vet as but yes there are wormers that can be given during lactation but think most of them are vet only ones (here in uk anyway)
