We are planning on getting an indoor cat scratching post/tower thingey for the stray black cat now that she is venturing inside more. She's older, age 10+, but is still playful and agile.

Something like this off Amazon, not too demanding for an older cat. Is this likely to be met with feline approval, do you think? She does like to take possession of boxes, so I think she would like a cat cave of some sort.

She will probably pay more attention to the box in typical cat fashion! I can’t see any reason she wouldn’t like the cat tree. If you are worried about mobility either place is near something she can use as a step or a little ramp? A spray of pet remedy or similar can make them LOVE their new toy.

We like to make cat caves out of boxes… in this case we made a boat…

Maybe, although she might end up preferring the box it came in. I find that cats like climbing up so they are people-height, and unless your cat is infirm or disabled, I wouldn't hesitate in getting a taller cat tree - preferably placed next to a window or door so they can have a nose at what's going on. Climbing keeps them fit and healthy, so I wouldn't be worried about her age being a limiting factor. With any scratching post, it should be tall enough so they can have a proper stretch and scratch, and the taller cat trees tend to have quite long bottom posts.

I’d get taller too. There’s nothing a cat likes more than looking down on you ?. My cat tree is positioned by the window and Pepper loves it up there spying on the neighbours when not sleeping.

Mines taller than that.

No they the most aesthetically pleasing but he loves the height. He scratches the posts but the only bit he sits or sleeps on is the top bed.
