Cat trackers - any recommendations/ reviews?

I’ve rehomed the yard cat due to the yard closing. So far he’s settling in well (nearly 3 weeks) but I’m afraid if/when I eventually let him out he’ll wander off. He ran away from his first home to live at the yard 13yrs ago - he’s about 15 now.

I thought getting a tracking collar may be useful if he gets out prematurely or does disappear at some point. So looking for recommendations / experiences of tracking collars.

I do have an iPhone but not sure how good AirTags are to track? I think you need a blue-tooth enabled iPhone nearby either my own or someone else’s in order to be able to track. If out of range it won’t work unlike GPS collars.

We use tractive for the dogs. They do a smaller size for cats.

Very easy to use and majority of the time it’s accurate. It does struggle if you are in dense woodland/ forest.

I've got tractive for one of my dogs. It seems really effective. I also get notifications when he "leaves the safe zone" so I know if he's left the house or car etc

Please, if you put a collar on a cat make sure it is breakable in case the cat gets caught on anything

I've found 2 collars in my field with trackers on, after posting on local Facebook pages I was able to return them, cat had travelled across a very busy A road and about a mile in a straight line to get them off.

Yes definitely I don’t put collars on my cats usually due to the risk.

I wish someone could develop a microchip tracker for pets. I believe the problem is with the power source
