So Rowan (12 yo female cat) is currently, on vet's advice, shut in back bedroom with a litter tray, food and water, in order to get some pee for the morning.

She has spent this afternoon going in and out of the cat flap, going out to pee but then repeating again and again. As it's been raining, can't tell if she actually peed, but she's normally good about scraping soil back over and didn't in any of these instances.

The vet are happy to take any pee i can collect in for analysis first thing tomorrow, and I've also booked the first available appointment at 9.30 in case she hasn't pee'd!

Any advise on timings for treatment or vet visits, or advice generally? Do they need to get treated within a certain time frame (I seem to recall boy cats do, because of their extra plumbing? )

I'm hoping to spend the rest of tomorrow on a (long awaited) spa day with my sister, but then have Friday off so can do any further necessary vet visit on that day - but then feel selfish about commitments tomorrow....

Anyone with recent experience please?

Whenever my cats, both boys and girls have had cystitis the vet has treated with Metacam as it’s usually stress related rather than bacterial. Holly tried to pee on everything that was soft and as she was in some discomfort and it was affecting her back legs she had Gabapentin for a few days as well. Vet said with stress cystitis it was important to try and break the cycle of peeing and there are non prescription tablets you can get that help with lining the bladder but typically I can’t remember the name of them. It usually clears up within a few days with the Metacam but watch out for blood in the urine. Our water is very hard so I gave them filtered and boiled, let it cool and they had it in a water fountain which really did encourage them to drink or in Sparkles case pat the waterfall and then suck it off her paw.

thanks for your comments HHD. interesting Rowan is already on Metacam for suspected arthritis ,with some lameness having been shown (that's something us horsey people tend to spot in any animal!!) , but she has also been over-licking her hinds and tummy leaving bare patches, and I'm slowly coming around to the possible behavioural diagnosis the vet mentioned as an original alternative at the time Metacm was first diagnosed.

I've tonight replaced the expired Feliway, but probably too late!

I once rang my vet about a female cat with cystitis. He said he would see her the following morning but to give her Metacam and did we have any antibiotics left from another cat's treatment? As it happened we did, I think they were amoxicillin. He said to give her those to stave off the infection until he could see her. I don't remember anything about stress, I doubt that she was especially stressed, she spent most of her day outside, hunting, although we were a multi-cat household.

We have often laughed about this episode, as the first time we met him, when he came out to a horse, he asked about our 'home vet kit' - and he knew us well enough by the time the cat had cystitis to know that we would most likely have leftover meds in our fridge.

Many apologies for the late reply. Rowan is fine, thank you, but not due to any specific reason or treatment.

Due to my ineptitude (having never shut a cat in a bedroom before) she escaped when i went in to give her some food!! D'oh She then spent the night on my bed, purr-fectly happily, and happy all the next day and since then, with no recurrence of any straining or agitation or otherwise.

I can only presume that it wasn't pee related (me jumping to conclusions - but I know delayed treatment for cystitis can cause further problems), but possibly an upset stomach, as during one of her trips out on Wed afternoon she passed some very soft and small poos..

Thank you for your help and advice.
