Hello, I am looking after a cat that has had an ear infection/issue since mid November and it is still not better. 600 quid spent on vet so far and still no further on it seems! Wouldn't be so bad but I don't own this cat, she is a yard cat but I have been basically the only one feeding and looking after her for the past number of years. She is approx 5 years old. The vets had her in for a day to see initially was it a tumour or polyps and they said it wasn't. So have been on steroids and antibiotics since with weekly check ups (myself and yard friend have been taking turns taking her to the vets). First antibiotics showed no improvement so a swab was taken and cultured and it turned out it was a different type of bacteria that was present so her antibiotics were changed. Now on day 19 of these particular antibiotics and no change. Last week they did a FIV/FeIV test (as she was a rescue/feral before she came to the yard) and that came back negative. As she was living outside (however with beds in barn and is well fed etc) I thought maybe bringing her home for a few days to help her ear heal. It was thought she was scratching and making the ear bleed and there has been continuous bleeding of the ear which is why she was brought to vets in first place. They said the steroids would stop this. She is now in my bathroom (I have other cats and also I can't have her bleeding all over the house) since Sat and ear is still smelly. I don't think she is scratching now it seems like the blood is pooling in her ear and then she shakes it and it splatters everywhere. Not a huge ammount of blood but there is fresh splatters each time I go into the bathroom. I am thinking the smell is a bit less today but maybe I am getting used to it.
Basically I am wondering if anyone knows of a cat ear infection taking this long to heal. I initially thought tumour as I have been there before with 2 of my own cats albeit not an ear tumour. But vet seemingly ruled this out. She is eating and drinking fine and has not lost weight, although she is a small cat anywway. She is in good form otherwise and thankfully is coping fine so far cooped up in the bathroom.

yes they did - she was sedated and looked at by the vet in early december.
It probably needs doing again, this time under a GA to get a really good look, plus possible cleaning out etc. I appreciate the cost to you though is not something to take on lightly.

Could you ask the rest of the yard to make any contribution they feel able to?

Just a little update. the ear seems to be improving albeit slowly. Was back at the vets since for another sedation and clean/check. They prescribed a antibiotic/cleaning drops combo off label and that seems to be doing the trick. She is still on steroids also. My mum has taken her so at least she is out of the dark bathroom! I saw her last night and ear looks a lot less "angry". Still a bit of blood coming from it but nowhere near as much as it was. So fingers crossed for a full recovery. Mum dosen't want her to go back to the yard until she is fully better. I wonder was it just an ear infection that was missed (she is a yard outdoor cat, I feed them but its not like I am observing them and she may have had an issue long before it got to the bleeding stage!), so thats why it has taken so long to heal. Also dust/dirt in the yard may not have helped the healing.
I did think it was a tumour but I think it would have grown more by now rather than the healing that is occurring. She has also put on weight and has a typical indoor cat belly!
