Australian sailor Tim Shaddock and dog rescued after two months at sea https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-66241231

Lucky pair being rescued. One skinny and very hungry sailor, and a fairly well fed looking dog. Tim clearly wasn't stinting when he divided the available food (raw tuna) and rainwater up between him and Bella.

Well done the pair of them.

I read this in the paper and was suitably impressed but the comments, from people who said they were experienced sailors were scathing. That is was unthinkable that an advanced sailor as this chap clearly was, couldn't rig some sort of sail and perform basic navigation, made it appear to be a stunt. Since I have no idea myself, until I'm told otherwise he gets the benefit of the doubt.

It'll be either a quarantine/health or an affordability issue. The flight alone would cost thousands, depending on the airline/ground handling company and she maybe needs a lot of paperwork/shots that wouldn't be completed in time to travel quickly, maybe he doesn't want to move the dog again suddenly all that time at sea. I'd be reticent about wanging mine in a crate and loading it on a plane after going through all that - plus if she's a stray that journey would be incredibly stressful at the best of times.

I know someone from Australia who competes in Europe and it is a chuffing nightmare bringing her dogs in and out, she can only really do it as she is well off.

Plus they're maybe sick of the sight of each other 😉

This, and I also saw that the dog looked in better condition then he did.

How did they have enough water? I can see fishing for food, but would there be enough rain for rainwater?

If he had some plastic and enough sun, he should have been able to distil the sea water.

As suspected, snip from the Fail:

People can only bring animals into Australia that are arriving from approved countries, which Mexico is not, and also once they are medically fit to arrive.
Australia has some of the toughest animal import laws in the world, and the process involves several hurdles which aren't cheap.
If Mr Shaddock had chosen to defy the odds again and attempted to bring Bella home, she would have likely had to temporarily stay in an approved country before coming down under.
Along with the costs of finding someone to care for her in a temporary location, Bella would have then been required to get vaccines, be microchipped, and undergo quarantine.
Instead, Bella will live out the rest of her days alongside Genaro Rosales, a member of the Marie Delia who took an instant liking to Bella, according to Mr Shaddock.
Mr Rosales promised Mr Shaddock that he would take care of Bella and keep her well looked after.

That's a really good ending 🙂. Probably better than staying with Captain Hapless and going on more adventures with him.

Awh that made me cry of happy tears

The skynews reported it but made it seem like he ditched the dog and twisted the news 🤦‍♀️

The lovely Ben Fogle has offered to pay for flights/quarantine and associated costs for Bella to be reunited with Tim. I don’t know if he’ll be taken up on his offer.
