cataracts

Just looking at horses for sale and xcame across a gorgeous mare whos price has dropped 1/2 because during previous vetting it was found to have a cataract in one eye. Would you buy it?? What would it affect long term and can it be fixed??

Answers would be gratefully recieved!

Our chappie has a cataract in one eye which he's had since he was born - is only small though. It doesn't seem to affect him at all and it never really has. I get the impression in bright sunlight that he cant see quite as well as he should and he tends to spook a little bit but nothing major - he can do all the usual stuff without any problems.

i guess it depends on the age of the horse and the size of the cataract. but why not go and see her and have a chat to the owner - if she sounds lovely then its worth a look

Thanks for that ad says it is only small in one eye. Horse is considerably cheaper than it should be. May have a look.

There was a post on here over the weekend about a horse failing vetting due to this exact problem and them being offered the horse at a much reduced price was a 4 yr old if it is the same horse, finding out a bit more from that person - link to thread below!

Said horse is on my yard! Not mine tho, belongs to a friend. she was very cheap at 6500 and sold straight away to 1st viewer giving you some idea of her quality. very sad situation for her owner to be in, i am convinced someone is going to get a bargain! she is off to leahurst tom for a full examination by the experts so if anyone has any q's im sure her owner wont mind me answering them after that! she has recent form jumping double clears bnov, loosejumps for fun and hacks without spooking so i guess its not bothering her much at the mo. oh, and im not on comission!! lol. such a shame TBH.

shes been up to see the experts now. its non-hereditary, caused by trauma - knock or bang to eye. she has good vision in it now, but can go back in 3 months to reassess and may be able to be operated on, though if it stays as it is they prob wont bother. so her other eye is unlikely to be affected which is good. any more q's you are welcome to pm me, an i can ask for you!

I was in the same quandary last March. Found what seemed the perfect horse, having him seen loads of others, only for vetting to pick up a cataract in one eye. Vet suspected it was caused by a trauma. Was really gutted, talked to loads of people, asked advice on here & most people said don't touch with a barge pole. A couple said if you can get the price down enough to take a chance go for it as he seems just right otherwise. We offered a (much) lower price, owners refused at first (it had been just as much of a shock to them) & a few days later they phoned up & asked if we were still looking. I actually felt quite sick when we went to get him in case we were making a big mistake, but he is great. You have to give him more time to see a jump on his dodgy side. We always get comments as he is not only a looker, but people are surprised that a very chunky cob is so agile, he loves games, and I love to say " yes, not bad for a disabled horse".

just to let every one know, she has been sold to a lovely new owner, going this wkend. to someone who has another with a cataract so have experience, they like her anyway so i hope they enjoy her!
