Hi there, My 22 year old TB has just been diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes. His left is worse and vets thinks he has only blurred vision where as his right eye is only mild. First of all I might add that my boy has shown no sighns what so ever of having cataracts but a vet did a general health check and found them. So my question is has anyone here had any experience with herbal aids for cataracts? I have looked on line and found a couple of products that claim they can help reduce cataracts or improve clarity. I guess I want to know if there are any good products that could slow down any degeneration of these cataracts. Opinions / suggestions please!
Thanks x

I don't really believe you can feed anything to affect cataracts - just things that will aid general health and then the eyes by proxy.

I took my old boy to the vet's for some dental work in Jan 2011 and when I went to pick him up, the vet said, "You know about his cataract, don't you?"

He could tell by the horrified expression on my face that I didn't

.

Further investigation showed he has bilateral cataracts - the vet reckoned they've come on so slowly that Obi doesn't even know any different. It's just a bit misty for him.

I have him checked every six months - along with his teeth check and so far there has been no change in them.

Vet can't predict if he will stay fine for years or go blind next year.....

He is 26 now, so I hope he will keep his vision for what time he has left.

The good thing is that horses have an excellent sense of hearing and smell. So he can hear the electric fence clicking and he can smell his way around the field, if he ever needs help.

If the worst came to the worst I would use bells on my other horse and find a small field for them both alone.

It's a crap picture, but (if you ignore my green phone and the reflection of my gloved hand) you can see his cloudy area.

Hi Oberon, thanks for the response. I did wonder if it was too good to be true! I am not overaly worried at the moment so will keep a close eye on him and see if his behaviour changes ie becomes more spooky etc! Hope your boy continues to do well. Thanks again!
