HHi All, I need thoughts on the situation I’m now in with my horse! He’s just been diagnosed with ringbone, he’s 11 and is currently; on bute. Now, I need him to loose weight, he’s done really well, but needs to loose more, but I can’t work him. He can’t be in on box rest, and needs to be out 24/7. He’s on livery, in a field which is okay, not too much, not too little, and that will have to stay as is also. I want to put a muzzle on him, but have always been of the mind that a few hours at a time – say4? Is about the longest, however I work fulltime, so he would have to wear it 10, possibly 12 hour stretches. Is this fair? I feel like I’m going in circles!!

I am about to muzzle my mare (when I can find one that fits!) and I will be doing so in the day time and off at night. So first thing in the morning and off again when I bring her in - Some do it 24/7!

I've had chunky ponies out in muzzles 24/7 when grass conditions dictate. I do bring them in every day though to give the muzzle a wash and feed vits and mins with a small low cal meal

agree he will be fine. The biggest problem is the possibility of the muzzle rubbing, or it's removed by a very cross pony (as happened with mine). Hope it goes ok. sm x

Thanks guys, I think in that case I will start him off with it on all day, and if things still not working, consider 24/7 - in his case I NEED to be cruel to be kind, he needs the weight off for the sake of his legs! Hopefully when we have a bit of progress he can start working and that will help - he'd been loosing it so well with wpork, but in a good way it was a good thing, becuase it brought up the slight lameness!
