Hi
My daughter and I could really do with some help.
We have bought a Shetland colt who was two in May. He came to us on Friday and we have been having problems catching him ever since. The issue is we have just bought our own land which has had no grazing on it for years so there is a lot of grass. He is now getting an upset tummy so I need to get him off the grass asap. We have tried everything we can think of to catch him but to no avail. We have tried
* sitting with him to see if he'll come to us
* leading our other two to where we want him - he does follow for a while and then runs off
* feed bowl full of treats
I have now run out of ideas - can anyone help?
Thanks
xx

I have a 12.2hh pony who, when the mood takes her, is a "monkey" to catch!
I would take your others away & walk him down......
Just keep him moving (which at first won't be hard!!), every time he slows down face him with the front of your body & send him forwards, don't let him stop. My pony starts off belting round in canter, then slows to trotting round me & eventually walking round me. I keep her feet moving but not aggressively.
When he offers to stop & turn in towards you, immediately turn away from him. If he turns away again, then turn back & send him on again until he offers to come to you again. Eventually he will either come up behind you or he'll stay put as you calmly walk backwards to him. Hopefully he will then allow himself to be caught.
I hasten to add that this should be done when you've plenty of time - sometimes it takes me 10 mins, sometimes it's 2hrs.....
I have tried cornering my pony (she just panics & jumps out - she cleared 1.25m once!!) & I've tried herding her into the stable yard - neither was successful!! Walking her down is the only thing that she knows she can't escape from, yet it involves no major hassle, it's up to her! Takes patience tho - I'd quite like to throttle her at times :p
