Seems to me a lot of my friends do this, One has a mare who wees on command into a bucket, and a gelding that, when I got them in for her one night, and didn't go into stable with a bucket for him to wee in, didn't wee all night!! Apparently he has a wee in the bucket, and thats it til the next day!

Mine all have a wee when they first get put to bed in the evenings, but its never occurred to me to catch it! What about splashback? :D

Though I suppose if you did this it would make the bed less wet, less mucking out etc.

majority of ours go straight in stable and wee, about 6 will go in and wee in a bucket if we place under them! it is useful mornings of events when you have mucked out, take them in, wee in bucket and then no re-mucking out

A couple dont like to wee infront of people or with door open so little harder to teach!!

They do wee through the night regardless

I have tried it with one of the geldings but he looked at me like I was a freak! lol!

& im currently trying to train one of the yearlings to pee & poo in a bucket overnight. Shes already such a tidy girl doing it all in a nice pile so thought I tried to develop this to a bucket. Then I can walk in in a morning & hey presto shes mucked out! So far its goin well!

I am trying. He has cottoned on to the fact that if he wees in the bucket he gets a reward, but hasn't cottoned on to doing it on command. He was on box rest over the winter and I thought it would be a good time to teach him, but he didn't really get it. I thought it would help with all the mucking out.

Any tips on training?

No tips I'm afraid but I'm going to watch this thread to try and pick some up! I've been trying to get a urine sample from my horse for the vets to check and everytime I bring out the dreaded bucket he stops weeing mid flow.... He's certainly not shy about doing it in front of me, but he definitely gets stage fright hehe

No tips on how to do it. My mare wees almost as soon as she goes into her stable, so if we are lucky we get a bucket underneath her just as she starts. I put a layer of shavings in the bucket to stop back splash and reduce noise.

Over a year I guess that's a few bales of shavings saved.

If mine wee an I have a bucket close by then yes I'll catch it, but if one of mine see's the bucket before he goes he won't wee, I have to wait for him to start then catch it. He gets lots of fuss and a treat and doesn't seem to be traumatised after :)

Well, I need to be more organised about this, was hopping from stable to stable last night and missed them all!

Stallions tend to poo in one spot and I have trained a gelding to do the same - leave a poo where I want him to poo and he does - leave it on the concrete just means shoveling it up!

OK now this really made me laugh - I had honestly never thought of doing this.

Can see the logic but my mare would freak if I stuck a bucket behind her just when she was preparing to relieve herself.

There is obviously a huge gap in her education

:D:D:D

A couple of mine will pee in a bucket happily - I just wait until they start, then walk in calmly with a bucket and they carry on filling it up.

But not managed it with the others - they all stop and look at me. One got so fed up with me trying to shove a bucket under him one day that finally he sighed, turned his head and nipped me, ever so gently but firmly as if to say, let me pee in peace, please!

Things that help - use a different shape and colour to a feed bucket, otherwise they just think you are bringing them feed and stop to walk towards you.

Shavings in the bottom to start with help stop noise and splash.

Wait until the horse is in full flow before you go in, and keep the bucket out of sight at first. If they have only just taken up the gelding pee position, they are easily put off. No idea with mares - imagine it might be a little more tricky!

In racing after a horse has won or if the horse has run very bad quite often a urine sample is taken for drug testig etc. The people that take the urine samples have to stay in with the horse they do a lot of whistling and shaking paper (they have as the bedding wouldnt advise shaking your newspaper at your horse!!) This nearly always seems to do the trick

Indeed I do. Saves a fortune in bedding if I can. My TB will usually wee about 5 mins after he's been ridden in the evening, so I keep an eye on him and have a bucket in waiting!

Mum's old pony would go into his box, take up the position and wait for the bucket.. he would wee without it but if you were there and not paying attention, he'd give you a very old fashioned, disapproving look! Did save a lot of bed over the years...:D

Oh, I wonder if this is why my boy always does a wee for me after exercise then when he see's the bucket? (ex NH racehorse)

Years ago I tried to get a urine sample from a mare. I got the bucket under her mid-flow. She was absolutely appalled! She obviously thought I was completely perverted. For several weeks afterwards, she was very cautious if she saw me carrying a bucket.:D

My mare always wanted to pee as soon as she got back in - on a nice clean bed !!!! I always knew she'd do it so the bucket was outside her stable door ready as soon as she went back in.Again like a lot of peoples horses she'd look at me as if to say "why?".

one of mine has a pee religiously in the same spot at the same time every night in the winter yet i've still never thot of trying to catch it. amazing the things you learn! i cant say i will try to catch it cos i wont but good idea

Yes as they love weeing on their clean beds when they come in! Mother is now obsessed as it 'saves shavings!' But with one of ours she won't wee if your are in the stable holding the bucket so we have to wait outside until she is just about to and then sneak in :D Other horse doesn't care and I normally use the poo scoop and then rinse it out so it doesn't spalsh on me! But our 'wee bucket' is an old flexible bucket and doesnt seem to splash too much.
Most people at our yard think it's quite amusing but I have seen a few trying to sneakily copy! :D

It was the first thing I taught my mare when I bought her. She soon learned (3 days) that it was rewarded with food, usually a haynet. Sometimes now she squeezes out a bit just to encourage me to get her something! She was so good that if I had her tied up outside while I mucked out, and she wanted the toilet, she would turn around and start begging once she had caught my eye. I swear she crosses her legs during the winter and waits to come into her stable. It was also useful in that she is quite reluctant to wee on "foreign" ground, and when I used to be out at shows for 8-10 hours, I could make sure she had had a wee before we set off, and even managed to persuade her to go at the showground on quite a few occasions. I would hate to think her bladder was sore because she was waiting for an excessively long time. I have always found it makes a considerable difference to the bed if you can catch even one wee a day and now that bedding is so expensive...
