I used to live in Surrey and visit Catlips farm, just off the M25 in Hertfordshire, a lot for the second hand tack, I still manage to get down there when I can, but I now live in Cumbria, 1 mile away from Scotland, so it's a bit off a way to go!!

I've heard there's a similar shop north of Manchester, is there? and if so where is it?

Is it stil in the house with the stuff dumped in piles that you have to rumage through, and when you find what you want you have to then go get a price or have they got organised in the last ten years that i have been away

Not ever heard of a 'Northern Catlips'. Do you mean a kind of branch through Catlips? Or just a similar style shop - nothing to do with the Herts one?

Similar style shop.

It was Sheila herself (owner of Catlips) that told me about the northern shop, she said she knew there was a similar shop, but didn't know where it was.

Catlips is still going strong... it drives me insane there though. I went recently and was SO happy to see there was no-one else there and thought it would be a quick visit.. it still took nearly 2 hours to exchange a couple of things!!! lol

I went for the first time a few weeks ago, hoping to have a good old rummage. Got there and couldn't get in the house because of the queue. When I asked somebody queing what was happening, they said it was normal practice to wait to be served and that you had to ask for whatever it was you wanted.

I must admit that I was disappointed, as there wasn't anything I particularly wanted, I just wanted to have a rummage as I'd heard so much about the place. So, as I didn't want to ask for anything in particular, I didn't queue and went home having still never been inside.

That's a shame, if you want new or good second hand things you wait in the queue as all of this is hidden away and needs to be brought down for you to see. If you just want a rummage and the chance of finding a real bargain (or catching a nasty disease) then you squeeze past the queue and go into the room on the left (take a dust mask).

OMG that brings back memories, I starting visiting Catlips when I was about 11 years old and am now 41. Haven't been there for years. Sheila must be getting on now, I mean really getting on in years.

I loved it, loved it, loved it and wondered how she ever made a profit. I bought a new saddle for her once but it didn't fit, took it back and before I said anything she offered me more for it than I had paid her! I was honest and told her so but am sure this happened more than once.

I wish I could return but living down South it just wouldn't be feasible to go back. Have thought often about setting up something similar down here but it just wouldn't be the same.

Oh, happy memories.

OMG!! I used to go there about 15 years ago!! And realised we're actually nearer than ever now - have GOT to go back. Could someone please pm me the address, directions etc.
