Catlips Farm

Yes Sheila is still their running the shop - she is amazing lady as I caught her mucking out last year (October) when i took a trip across into Herts to get things

In her 80's now I do believe, I went recently and to be honest unless you are after a tatty 2nd hand rug it isn't worth it any more, I always take over a sack of stuff to exchange and a long list of stuff I need so she doesn't have to keep going up and down stairs. She had just one item on my list and that was one pair of new pony brushing boots, nothing else at all and my list wasn't for odd things, just the usual bridle parts, boots for ponies, boots for me and some other small stuff. I used to go once/twice a yr but don't think I'll bother again, shame as she used to be the place to go for everything :-(

OMG I used to LOVE, LOVE, LOVE going to Catlips Farm - it was a complete institution!

And if you ever tried approaching via the front track rather than the back drive, you were very brave!

How fantastic to be able exchange a grown out hacking jacket or pair of breeches towards a new pair, or jacket.

I often see photos of Sheila’s daughter in H&H she is a great horsewoman!

I still go now and then I must say she does stock some new pretty decent English leather bridles and they are not expensive, I have done a few swaps and got some decent second hand bits that I couldn't find anywhere, so sometimes it's worth a visit although the rug room is just terrible most of what is in there is only fit for a fire it's not even worth a rummage, she is a very interesting lady though I like going just if I end up having a chat with her.

OMG, what back track?! I swear my first car met its maker from bumping up that drive:D

I got a georgous mears hacking jacket there for next to nothing ... if only it still fitted:o

I outfitted my current horse there by chopping in my warmblood’s saddle. It’s been the same since I started going over ten years ago. The rug pile IS worth a rummage, a mate got a Fal Pro fleece, the very heavy harlequin one a couple of years ago, I’ve got fleeces although haven’t been for a long time now. The drive is a trauma unless you have a 4x4. :D

I have known Sheila and Catlips for well over 30 years, though I moved out of the area three years ago so haven't been since. Sheila is a very knowledge lady and I have picked up amazing bargains there, and the fact you could trade in things was great as he sells new as well as second hand. The rug room has to be seen to be believed and the house must have been amazing many years ago if you are fairly local worth a visit.

Just read this thread out of interest. However, from what I’ve read elsewhere on the net, I gather there are gazillions of saddles there...

I have a very awkward to fit horse, that i need a very cheap jumping saddle for. It’s about an hour down the road from me, is it worth going and is the lady likely to be able to pull the right saddle out of her stash?

Ref saddles, I haven't been there for many years, but I did have a horse that was difficult to fit for saddles, and Sheila gave me an amazing saddle to try on him - it was a Stubben Parzival saddle and it fitted him beautifully and was in brilliant condition and was an absolute bargain!

Its worth going just to look at the rug room. Imagine a huge room with a huge pile of rugs, which people are climbing like a pyramid and sifting through them. There are bargains to be had - if you can bother looking for them. I gave up. Although useful for little bits and bobs and if you ask the lady she is helpful.
