Catlips?

BSJAShowjumper you do make me laugh! Pls feel free at looking down on me for buying a £2k second hand saddle, saving £700, a £300 saddle, saving me £300, etc., etc., etc....

And I agree, I don't like women wearing red jackets - am rather purest too!

where is this shop?

I am in Lincolnshire and there is nothing like this near me.

I am a bit weird about 2nd hand clothes, but tack and such like, the cheaper the better as long as it is in good condition.

ok so i was thinking of going there as lot of people at my yard go but is it ALL second hand as i dont want second hand stuff? [sorry im a tad snobby lol]
x

good god girl, if my 2 lads didn't have second hand clothes when they were small they would have been permanently naked! be grateful for what is on offer until you can afford things yourself!!

Oh for goodness sake!! The girl has asked a question - not asked for a lecture! If her parents are happy to buy her stuff then who the flipping hecks business is it but hers and her parents? She hasn't said that all second hand stuff is a load of poo, just that she'd rather buy new.

Wow where is this place? I love a bargain. I got a Barbour show jacket for £30 off ebay and it was like new. I went to a showing demo with a really high up judge not so long ago and it was really refreshing to hear him say that as long as things were looked after etc didn't matter how old they were and that ebay was a wonderful place. I find kids find it easy to talk flippantly about money and how much things cost. Wait till they have to work out how long they worked to pay for something.

Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire.

oooooooooooooooo, get you!!!shes a lucky kid then if mummy and daddy buy her everything she wants, she needsto learn the value of money, or am i being old fashioned?

I think you're being a bit childish to be honest. It's not actually any of our business as to whether she learns the value of money or not - that's for her parents to sort out not us.

Tbh posts like this made by the OP genuinely sadden me. Clearly the 'recycle' and 'reuse' message just isn't getting over to people - although it's great to read so many people do use second hand clothing / tack etc. Kitting both horse and rider with stuff that would otherwise be binned is a brilliant idea and full marks to the people who have set this up and to those who use it. Wish it was nearer to me :D

Nop not old fashioned at all

Although I do confess to still being spoilt by mummy & daddy dearest past my teenage years :p

Brambleandmonty I do believe that any colour jacket can be worn but only top 250 and those who represent GB can wear their red collar :)

ok, ok- let her waste her money, she doesn't listen to any of the other far more experienced posters anyway so why should i bother- only glad that my kids listened to advice at her age!!

hate to say it but saying you wont buy second hand stuff makes you sound like a completely stuck up child, if taz wasnt kitted out in second hand stuff god i'd be riding him bareback with a headcollar and leadrope and the only new thing he would get would be his shoes, have to say i have alot of second hand stuff of ebay if i bought loadsa brand new stuff i'd be broke, being a student is bad enough without having to fork out lots of money on things that i need, but i can get cheaper, so yes you are being stuck up

Maybe she will grow up and be embarrassed about her spelling and grammar! Never mind trying to school your horse, you need to pay more attention at school - I would suggest particularly in English lessons.

Quite an unecessary comment. Not everyone is fortunate enough to be good at reading, writing and spelling. Nasty.

Who are am, or anyone else for that matter, to judge who buys what, whether new, second had, third hand, found in a bush ... the OP asked a question and some of the answers on here just seem bullyish.

Catlips is a wonderful, highly recommended experience and sells both second hand a new items. It is an Alladins cave of wonderment and Sheila and her helpers are wonderful. She is a legend. OP, go have a look and whatever you buy, have a wonderful time.

[QUOTE found in a bush [/QUOTE]

that made me laugh:)
It is nice if you can afford to buy things new, but i find it fun trawlling(sp?) around second things looking for bargins esp. on really expensive brands which if new price i probably would be able to afford. so there really is no need to be snobbish about second hand things!!

yes i thought this too :o i'm a teacher in a sixth form and generally i am really disappointed with the speliing, grammar etc of the students when they come to us from secondary school- but it isn't their fault, its a problem with the standard of education in general where teachers don't have the time to mark work properly. when i did teacher training i was told not to comment on /circle all spelling and grammar errors and to just focus on those that are subject specific. needless to say i now circle EVERYTHING but obviously many teachers won't. so don't blame teenagers/ children if their spelling is ****- it might not be their fault

Sorry, slightly off topic i realise! this catlips place sounds truly AWESOME!:D

Call me playing devils advocate and playing into the intention here...But.

I don't tend to buy second hand stuff either. I've bought a couple of saddles, but that's about it. Everything else has been new.

Doesn't make me a bad person?

:)

anyone can wear a red jacket now, im not even a SJ'er and i know that!!!!

this catlips place sounds amazing, ill buy new if thats the only way but i love a good bargain.my rolled jumping bridle was £30 off ebay because someone spelt Stevens as "Steffens" so no one else bid on it, its barely used!!!!im currently watching out for 2nd hand patent bridles for Bruce because he doesnt compete so no point spending a load on it.

im the same with clothes though, ill happily waste a load in abercrombie for EG but equally i adore rooting through vintage shops for bargainous dresses and jewellery.

i dont really get why people get so worked up either way, i dont waste time trying to work out if people have *bought new*, and dont care how much other people spend-why the big stress?!

Ok now i know your a total muppet, have you noticed anyone alse at your level wearing a red show jacket? no? that'd be because there's a reason you cant wear them, read your rule book love!!

er i think she actually can. anyone can- yes they look like a plonker but technically you can wear one at RC or at BSJA British Novice.

Two things. I have been wondering where it is so thanks for that - is it easy to find once you get to Rickmansworth? Why don't people use the spell checker - I cannot read some of the posts on here-not this thread-(there was one tonight) the spelling/grammar is so bad.

PM me and I'll give you directions. Even I can find it-pretty amazing!

I love the fact that Catlips is getting tons of free publicity here! Love the place and have in fact been known to disappear into the rug pile occasionally!:o

exactly...its USED to be a rule that you couldn't. now they have changed it. i think its only BE where you aren't allowed anymore. definitely for BSJA you are allowed LOADS of people wear them for British Novice and 90cm AM classes. And i went to local RC today and someone had a red jacket on there too.

but yes i agree people look ridiculous and they SHOULDN'T be allowed to wear them...

I will quite happily buy second hand, but I will also quite happily buy new.

While I think it is a bit silly to be snobby about buying second hand, if nobody bought new and then sold it on, there would be no second hand stuff.

I have just spent a fair amount on new stuff today - I saved up for a while - but I will head over to Catlips for a saddle when I find a new horse. While I am there, I will also part ex a bridle - it is brand new English leather, never used, which I bought ages ago in anticipation of getting a larger horse than I am now likely to be getting, and so is the wrong size. So while it is "second hand", it is also as good as new.

I have also found that if I am buying a load of cheapish bits, such as I did today, it doesn't work out much more expensive to buy new as opposed to buying off ebay, because the postage on ebay adds quite a bit to the price.
