Cavalesse anyone tried it

I was too bit did a search on here which came up with some posts saying it didn't work for them and others that said the ingredients can be found in brewers yeast

So I wavered and upped the brewers yeast dose instead

I used Cavalesse for 3 years in a row for my horse. But in conjunction also used a good fly rug and moved horsey to a more open field (more breeze to blow the little b*ggers away) further away from the river. Horse was much better, but not entirely convinced that was down to just the Cavalesse. So, have decided to give it a miss this year and try brewers yeast, as other have mentioned.
So, I would also be very interested to know where to get it and how much to give!?!?

I buy Gold Label brewers yeast from my local tack shop but before that got some from eBay

Pony is only 11hh and I feed about 30g a day now which is over the recommended dose but as I understand it not detrimentally bad. I fed it throughout the early part of the winter at about half that too so didn't stop at all as I think they need to have it well in advance of the SI season

Doesn't mean I am right though, that's just what I personally do

Introduce it slowly if you try it, not only because it's something new but also because they don't always like the taste, I have to add mint as well to get my pony to eat it

Also heard good things about the Skratch Plus supplement so worth a google

We have fed brewers yeast 25g a day to our cob who is approx 450kg for about 4 years now. We do not stop in winter. Her Sweet Itch is virtually non existent now. Although she was no where near as bad as some horses. She has never had a rug although that would have been the next step if we hadn't started her on Nettex Itch Stop and then on Brewers Yeast The active/main ingredient in Cavalesse is nicotinamide (Vitamin B3), Good quality Brewers Yeast is high in B3. Marmite is also made from Brewers Yeast. Google Brewers Yeast for horses there are several suppliers. I have read on forums not to feed Garlic as it does something to the immune system that can make Sweet Itch worse. I have also read that it is a good idea to cut down on feeds that contain sugar and molasses.

I have tried it and one horse it helped abit but the other it didn't make a difference and it cost a bloody fortune. I have gone back to the Rambo hoody and fly spray. I do have some left tho if any one wants to try it the cream is good on the weepy sores

thanks for the replys guys, im tempted to try brewers yeast but when i googled it a forum came up with someone saying it made her horse worse :-/
or shall i ignore it and just get some :-) hes 13.3 chunky lad, how much do you think he will need ?

I did a trial of Cavalesse in conjunction with my vet 3 years ago - waste of time. Absolutely pointless product - and I got it free as I think it's quite costly.

Yes, the soothing gel, soothes but no more than aloe vera.

Try the BioEos vaccine via the Sweet-Itch centre - it's had some very good results.

he was on the trial for 2 years running, i dare not take his rug off he gets it quite bad, so not sure if it worked, but he hasnt been on anything for the past few years and have managed it really well, the odd rub but nothing major, i think the only way is prevention, but im willing to try anything to help him.
