Well, Sunny started his 3 month Cavalesse trial today. I was going to wait until mid-April because he usually starts coughing mid May when the hawthorn comes into bloom. But to my horror I've seen some trees already in blossom so decided had to start today. Cavalesse is a relatively new product primarily designed to help sweet itch horses by blocking the production of histamine, but mfrs say it's also good for COPD/RAO. I expected it to be quite palatable because it's main constituent is water soluble B3. But it's quite bitter. Mfrs advise dripping it onto a sugar lump but Sunny needs 3mls daily which is too much even for 3 sugar lumps. But he happily ate his 3mls today dribbled onto a slice of bread with a smear of marmalade for good measure. Watching how happily he gobbled it up I'm changing to half a slice daily, no marmalade. This is really Sunny's last chance for any quality of life this summer so fingers crossed. My wonderful vets gave me a 3 month pack to trial (normally £90) and I hope to spread the word as far as possible to all sweet itch, RAO horse owners so will post periodically.
