So following on from my big fat stinky feet thread I've invested in a pair of cavellos from hoof boutique. They are massive, but seem to fit really well, and after an initial hesitation he happily walked about over the sharp gravel. I'm thinking about keeping them, but I just wondered if anyone else had any experiences to share. I noticed for example when I took them off that they were a little sweaty. I don't have any pads in them as they are quite snug. Also, there is already a little bit of wear on the treads. How long do they tend to last? :D

They are brilliant. I have an ex racehorse who has god awful feet, shallow, soft soles. Shoes have been taken off, correct diet and his feet are improving all the time. I am now able to ride with the boots over terrain that was previously impossible. He is turned out during the day now without them and put them on for hacking. Today I have crossed the river twice and they never moved. I do have the jell pads in them.

I use Cavallos for my TB - just on the fronts. She doesn't always need them, but I tend to find she is footier in wet weather, so I generally put them on for hacking when the weather is wet. I've had mine about two years and still plenty of wear in them. They do look clumpy but never move, and like Justabob I also go through fords with no problems. The only thing I do find is that they're not great in mud and tend to be a bit slippy in mud, but perfect for roadwork and stony surfaces.

What diet do you feed justabob?

Chaff, speedibeet, Baileys No1. In winter he also has Micronised Linseed and Blue Chip Balancer and copper supplement, brewers yeast. He IS turned out during the day on good grass. CPTrayes on this forum is a very good person to ask about feeding for barefoot horses. Good luck and keep on with the Cavello boots.

My cavallo simples have lasted a year. Can't recommend them highly enough. They have only come off once when DH put them on and she had a hooley. They stay on in mud and water and have never rubbed.

When I use boots (Easyboot Gloves is what we have), I clean hoof off with a hoof brush, then sprinkle it liberally with Lanacane Medicated Powder before popping it in the boot. This seems to help stop feet getting sweaty and also (I hope) fends off any nasty bugs breeding in the warm damp enclosed conditions inside the boot. And it stops rubs :) You can buy it in Boots (don't tell them it's for your horse's feet or you'll get some funny looks!).
