Took the munchkin to his first competition in just over 5 months yesterday, and he was a super star!!

Just wanted to share my happiness with everyone [=

I know at points he looks slightly uncontrolled, and he puts his head up, but I'm trying to not need a martingale, and just work through it, as it is purely excitement! (sp?)

So, here is the video I posted on here In October:

and here is the one yesterday:

Not impressed with the guy telling you to 'come on come on' during your round ! Was it the jump off you filmed ???

You got round and thats what matters well done, how come you are trying to give up on your martingale ???

Hhaha, sorry should have explained,

It was the pairs, so was against the clock. He's a 5 year old (turned 5 10 days ago!) And being his first comp for so long, I decided to go for a steady clear [=

He has a cracking jump on him, just he can go when he wants to, and then flattens, so I was only competing to get a steady clear [=

I dont want a martingale, as I want him to relax whilst at competitions. At home, his head is no way near that high up, so I think it's just excitement. Might try one after a few competitions if his head doesnt lower a tad lol

It seems you have just the right attitude & riding style for your 5 year old. You must be pleased he's so keen, you've identified clearly what you're working on and I've got a feeling you'll get there. It'll be interesting to see him & his progress towards the end of the summer :)

I would really put on your martingale and you may be able to ride with your reins a bit longer?

Looks very tight and tense, you need lots and lots of gridwork!

Keep up the hardwork :)

I'm not very good at giving cc but it seems like you're able to hold him back more now. It would've been nice to have a like for like video to see more differences though :)

So when you ride him at home are you able to put your leg on and actually ride him as opposed to hanging on for dear life as you do at the shows :D

As for the martingale you need to look at why he is flinging his head up and tanking off, though in the second vid you are able to get him back to trot it is still an uncontrolled trot and he is still racing to and over his fences. IMO you need to work on the flatwork side of things especially as you know he has a good jump. Get a good flatwork trainer and try not to run him against the clock!
