thinking about entering some local shows this year some of them are qualifiers and sash shows.

for those of you who dont know he is a 16.3hh tb x (not sure on what crossed with) and is 22yo. he was in a bad way before I got him no weight or muscle tone, taken a long time to get him looking better and with the winter we just had he was lucky to pull through.

Ridden in a snaffle (would double be better?), with flash. does he need a hunter type bridle or a coloured browband?

Planning on entering veteran ridden/inhand, open horse, hunter? any other classes you think worth doing let me know.

I'd definitely go for veteran classes but he could do with a tad more condition - not easy with oldies , what do you feed him at the moment? I can see that he's quite high withered which is common in TB's but as he's got older it's showing off his back as having quite a dip - also understandable at his age , could you improve his top line with a suitable conditioning food?
 
He needs more topline but as you said he was in a bad way when you got him so it will come in time, especially with spring grass imminent!
Personally I would show him under saddle because inhand his back will look dipped.
Definately go for vetran.
Once the grass comes through and he looses his winter wollies he will look like a different horse again I am sure :)
 
I would also go for ridden veteran.

As you are going to be doing local riding club shows then there is no need to use a double bridle. If you are both happy using a double then it would be OK to use one.

If you can I would take the flash strap off and definitely don't use a coloured browband (they are for hacks).

You could also try riding club/family horse.
 
Well done for helping him - he has a nice shine on his coat and as others said the grass will do wonders. It's hard to keep a young horse in good condition through the winter we have just had let alone a veteran, so you have done well, all credit to you.

he is currently fed equiflex for joints, 1 stubbs scoop of cherry chaff and 1 scoop of cool mix, is out during day and in on a night, alos had adlib haylage when in, this pic was taken a month or 2 ago and has since lost some of the woolies and has gained more muscle tone and weight.
 
I cant really help, but just thought i'd add that im really interested in this post. I just got my TB x... who looks remarkably like yours, minus some of the fluff! And am also debating what to do showing wise....interested in the browband comment- I was considering doing ridden veteran, maybe riding horse, maybe something in-hand, hummmm can you tell i'm completely clueless! But was under the impression that as hes not native or a hunter then a velvet browband would be correct?
 
I know showing is a minefield! from what have gathered on here it all about the build of the horse as to whether it gets classed as a hunter etc and then that states if you go for coloured browband or not.
