Just wondered if anyone could do a CC on Ethel :) I'd like to know what other people thought about her conformation, weight, feet, etc and what you think of her :)

Ta :D

I would say she needs abit more weight and topline, but then again, ive always had huge warmbloods that look like stallions so im probably not the best to comment x

Definitely needs more weight on.
Picture's not close up enough to see feet properly, but she does look as though her heels are a little under-run and front toes too long, but not massively..

I think she is a bit on the thin side for my liking. I am used to stockier built Quarter horses though and currently wave a Percheron x mare who may be a wee bit too fat so there you go.....

Agree with the others. She needs weight on and she hasn't any muscle over her topline. But she looks like she'll be nice once this happens. x

She looks good in her coat. I'd like more condition on her but she does have an unfortunate neck which doesnt help the overall appearance.

Okay thank you everyone :) you've all basically said what I have thought. Her feet do need doing, farrier is coming out next week so once they're done I might post again about those. At the moment she is on a scoop of Alfa A Original which is currently being switched to Alfa A Oil, a scoop of barley loops, a handful of speedi beet and pink powder and gets a barrow full of hay every night, lives out 24/7 although grass isn't too good. She is only 3 and will soon be on a break over the winter to fill out and grow a bit, but hopefully when in work next year she'll get more muscled and have more of a topline, unless I can get a decent topline on her when she's out of work?? How would I be able to do that?

PS, scoop is one of the small rectangle ones. Should I up the feed she has or try her on something different?

She has no topline and is lacking weight. I think she looks very weak. You can get some more topline on her my correct feeding and I would do that before she starts work, as when you start to break her it is probable that her condition will drop slightly, which if she did in her current state would leave her very thin.

She is currently in work, not doing much at all, just in the school once a week and hacking out twice a week. So this is how she looks when working, when she was out of work she looked better.

I think it's a good idea to just rest her at the mo, as she does look like she needs really feeding up. I would get the vet's advice if she doesn't put on weight - and have you wormed her ? Also, my three year old has needed his teeth doing every 6 months, so it's worth checking that.

Love the name :D

Sorry never relised that she was in work, it is probably taking a lot out her, especially the stress of breaking etc does on a young horse. I would consider changing her feed and also as shysmum said.

Okay I was considering letting her have her break now, she wont come back into work until March time, a month before she turns 4. She has been wormed, haven't had her teeth done yet but she eats all of her dinner and hay. I asked the vet about her a couple of weeks ago as I was concerned about her, but he said she could do with more food and a bit more work to get muscled, but I don't want to work her more than she's in now.

Thanks :) I like it too lol

She has been in very light work for a few months now, she was in training to be a racehorse and was broken last year as a 2yo, and was very good to re-break a few months ago, acted as if she had been being ridden the whole time and as far as I could tell she wasn't stressed at all. She was on Saracen Recoup the first few months I had her and did very well on it, but I thought she could do just as well on other feed, but as nothing else seem's to be working I think I'll put her back on that with the Alfa A Oil and Speedibeet. How long do you give a feed before deciding its not working??

She's not that thin, just a bit on the lean side. My TB mare was the same weight and my vet said it's because of her conformation and she is naturally a lean horse.

It would be good to get a bit more weight on her to help her through the winter. I found swapping hay for haylage does wonders. Also maybe give her some fibre beet or equivalent. You could also feed soya oil which is very good for weight gain. Saracen feeds do a feed called Equi Jewel which is also excellent for weight gain.

If you'd like to keep her mucles developing whilst she's not in work you can do daily stretches with her. There's a really good book called Pilates for Horses by Gillian Higgins if you're interested. You could also take her for walks inhand to keep her interested. I did this with my mare whilst she couldn't be ridden.

Also, it can take upto a year for a ex racehorse to use his food as fat as opposed to muscle. The fact that she is young and was in training could mean that she will take a while to look like a 'normal' horse.

I would say that is working, maybe try some hard feed? We had an 4yr old racer which came to us in a lot worse condition than yours, but he gets-
pink powder
1 big scoop of sugar beet
handful of chaff
Scoop of barley
2 scoops of course mix
oil
He is just doing road work at the mo. He is a small type as has muscled up loads.

My horse is an okish doer but is medium work (also TB)
He gets
1 scoop of showing and condition mix (badminton horse feeds- really recommend this)
Pimk powder
oil
garlic
1 medium scoop of sb
Alfala A (2 handfulls)

Just spoke to my friend who is very good on feed bs she suggested swapping speedi beet for alfa beet, using a youngstock balancer such as Blu chip pro and although muscle/topline will only improve with work topline conditioning cubes may help x

dominobrown - Have already said what she's on, but I guess you've missed it :) She has a scoop of Alfa A Original which I'm currently switching to Alfa A Oil, scoop of barley loops, handful of speedi-beet and pink powder, but I'm going to up this amount and add Recoup into her feed as she did well on it before.

Chestnut mare - Okay thank you :) I will look into them

No i didn't, maybe look into what chestnut mare said. I suggested hard feed, as deffo more feed if she isn't too hot. :)
