I'm not very good at anything to do with confirmation, i do pick up things from these forums but am far from an expert! So i was wondering what you all thought of my new little hoss?

He's a 5yo ex racer (hasn't raced for 2years, he was turned away for most those two years), i've been re-schooling him from the field since September. I'd absolutely love to event him, but i am an amateur having never evented so we'll see, other than that it'll just be funrides, showing, SJ etc just want to have some fun with him!! He is pigeon toed slightly i know that!

A few weeks after he arrived.

He is very hard to photograph as he spends most him time looking dopy oor attached to my shoulder so apologies for the rubbish photos!

And opinions on his way of going? I'm trying to keep everything varied (hacking, schooling groundwork) but am working very hard to get his flatwork right. He had no idea what was going on when we first started schooling but these are more recently!

Thank-you in advance!

I think he's absolutely lovely, although I do have a soft spot for TBs anyway. Looks nice and short coupled and there's plenty of him as well - not a skinny minny. Can't say anything bad about his confo because I don't know much about confo, but if I was looking for one, he would definitely be the sort I would go for. He's beautiful. Good luck in whatever you do with him. x

Oh he is seriously lovely and I don't even go for TBs! There's a lot to like. Fab shoulder, nicely put together, fills the eye, nothing glaringly wrong, good depth of girth, love the back end and bum, nice and chunky for a TB. You look like a good enough rider to me to critique your own riding! Looks like you're doing a good job. Hard to tell from stills but it looks like he's going calmly in trot but lacks energy/impulsion/sparkle/oomph/connection. Turn the dial up a notch and ask for a bit more from him. He's hollowing going in to canter but you'll know that yourself and you look competent enough to sort that out in the end.

Im rubbish at cc so i shall not comment on that lol ... But i love love love him!! Especially his hindquarters, very nice example of a Tb :D You just gots to love a nice Tb :D

I like him. :) He also has pasterns of a good length. I see quite a few TB's with really long pasterns and I always worry about their future soundness.

Thank-you everyone, we are working on his 'oomph' (i can really see why he wasn't so good as a racehorse!) a lot of transitions to get him going off the leg a bit more as he can be very lazy and is very good at evading! His canter is a struggle, up until about 3 weeks ago he couldn't actually canter with someone on him in the school so we've got to focus lot's of energy to our canter as quite frankly it's rubbish :D.

I'm very fond of him though, he has tons of character and has just taken everything in his stride so far. He has a pop on him to!

OOH! Lovely short-coupled compact little TB! I love the short-bodied ones :D
I used to ride one that was like a little cannonball :D

Slightly on the forehand maybe, and hollowing in canter, but what can you expect after just a few weeks! Keep up the good work with him, I'm sure he'll be lovely!

I am so jealous! he is everything i want my TB to be, his confirmation looks pretty good and as others have said he's nice and compact but has a good deep shoulder and girth. His legs look good too from what i can see from the pics, although from a couple of pics he looks like his hocks are slightly underneath him but i think that's just cos his not standing square.

Have you done any jumping on him yet?

He definately looks promising, i am sure he would event if his jumping is good.

Have fun with him!

My little man is exactly the same ... Well I say little, he's 16.3hh and only 3, came off the race track about 4 months ago I feel for the same reason yours did lol - no energy!
He was an absolute dope when I first got him, with a bit of grub down him he looks amazing now.
What yours saying is absolutely the same for me aswell, I turned him away for a bit over the winter to 'be a horse', just hacked him very lightly. Im now bringing him back into work to be a proper riding horse and the poor thing cant trot round the corners in the menage cause hes so stiff and canter is a no go so i keep that for when we're out on hacks in the fields.
Doing lots of transitions with him though has seriously helped, responds better to the leg etc etc even though he's still leaning on the reins a bit and head shaking (typical ex racer trait) it is much better than when I first had him.
If he pulls ... I let go ... then pick the contact back up again ... If he does it again ... I repeat lol its such a lengthy process but so rewarding :)
Yours is absolutely gorge, looks just like my chestnut giraffe!
Keep up the good work

its so good to see a horse with proper hind quarters! i think there's a lot of power in there to be unleashed when his schooling has progressed

What a lovely little horse! If you made me criticize him I would say his neck is set on a bit low as is his tail. Nothing I would lose any sleep over though, good luck with him :)

A little yes, he's got a lovely jump and is very honest. We actually went over a few XC fences in a group of horses this w/e he went first or last jumped everything including a decent ditch first time without a lead!

This is the only photo i have of him jumping!

He sounds very similar, this was major not long after his last ever race at my friends yard where he was turned away.

Gangly boy!

Mine is only 16.1 at 5 so a bit smaller than your boy, how is yours bred?

He looks fab and as others have said a fab back end - My mare could do with some of that she has a puny Araby butt ;)

What a diffence you have made to his condition too - He looks so much happier now bless him.

Well done, good luck and I think you are doing a great job, enjoy x
