Thought I'd ask people their opinions on my new little project. She's a connie mare just turning 3 and stands at around 14.2hh (on her tippy toes). It was one of those cases where I saw her and I just had to have her no matter what :D. When I went to see her the people I was with and I guessed she was actually 3/ rising 4 judging by her temperament, how she was going and also by the fact that she was backed in august and that her passport must have the wrong age on. However, now I've spent more time with her its pretty obvious that the passport is right, which means she was backed at 2 1/2. I'm now a bit lost with what to do with her, because on one hand she loves working and hacking out but on the other hand the last thing I want to do is mess her joints up. I think her fantastic temperament was taken advantage of a bit as she's already gone out and done a jump show before I bought her! I thought she'd already done at lot when i was under the impression she was rising 4, but like I said it was a case of knowing that she was the one I was bringing home the second I saw her.

What would people be doing with her? I'm pretty happy turning her away and she's definitely getting a few months over summer off but I'm worried about keeping her weight off as she lives off thin air as it is!
Also prize for someone working out what colour she actually is, her passport says dun, she was sold as a silver dun but she seems like she might be greying out??? She was slightly more yellow when i first saw her.

Shes lovely, congratulations. If she was mine, she would be turned away and brought into work next year.

Why not try a few in hand classes with her

I had a similar thing with my boy..he was backed etc at just 2....several months on I bought him and he was a tad messed up mentally so I chucked him out in the field. He is now rising 4 and ready to start work. He has matured alot both mentally and physically in that time and still has a way to go.
I would most definitely turn her away. She looks lovely :)

Lovely looking pony, Congratulations. If she were mine I would perhaps do some in hand shows or in hand walks and have the odd sit on, but leave everything else until next spring.

Thanks, she was definitely the cutest I went to see!

Magicmillbrook: that's pretty much what I'm doing currently, just letting her get out and see the world with no pressure on her. She's done more than enough already. The yard I'm at doesn't have 24hr turnout yet, but should transition over in the next few weeks so I can let her go out and chill in the field properly (providing she doesn't balloon). Hopefully i can find a way to get and out and do some in hand with her over summer.

Paint Me Proud: I'm thinking its going that way too. Good thing I had a coloured before so I'm relatively good at getting stains out!

A dun must have black mane, tail, legs with no white and is characterised by a dorsal stripe along the spine. As far as I am aware Connie's do not carry the dun gene but can be buckskin. She looks like neither to me and looks to be a bay now greying out to be dapple. She is lovely and personally I would turn her away til next year from ridden work and just focus on having some fun in hand and getting to know her.

Definitely greying out my Connie looked exactly like this and is now almost pure grey apart from black lower legs and dark grey mane and tail - these are all gradually getting paler.

She's absolutely gorgeous!

No they don't technically carry the dun gene as far as I'm aware but its what they call buckskin in the studbook. She was distinctly yellow tinged a few months ago and her full sister is definitely "dun"/buckskin. She does have a dorsal stripe funnily enough but that's starting to go grey too. All the ponies in her lines are grey or "dun" so it wouldn't surprise me if'd been bay, jsut would've been quite bright by the look of it. I've never been around a horse while they were greying out so its pretty interesting to watch. She's a different colour everyday it seems!

She's such a little character- everything (including chewing my hat silk) is fun! at the moment. :P
