CCI 1* - would you do an Intermediate first?

My horse is being aimed for a 1* at the end of the season - either Weston Park or Aldon - so the plan is that he starts off the season with a couple of PN, then does a few N classes, then an I class to finish off before the 1* (assuming he qualifies!)

Reading the BE handbook it seems to me that you don't have to do an I class before a 1* any more, but can qualify from doing 4 N classes with 2 clear XC and 2 FEI qualifying results - am I reading this right, or have they changed it now? Also, would you always do an I class before a 1*?

I hasten to add that he is on part-loan for the season so it won't be me riding him - I'm rather wishing I hadn't made that arrangement though, I've started to worry he will do something to injure himself

No, that is not right, there is a mis-print in the rule book which is corrected online! I saw that too and was hopeful it was correct, but a friend phoned BE and it isn't.

You either need the intermediate run or you need to do a Novice two day - my plan is to do a Novice two-day next year - as one professional said to me 'there is no need to go intermediate to do a 1* if you can qualify another way, as 1* is still novice level'. I doubt very much we'll be ready to do an intermediate next year, so plan on doing a novice two day instead. There are only 3 a year though, so you have to plan well ahead to get the qualification!

I don't event, but from being with many people that do and compete at CCI* and CCI** I know they would always run there horses over a few Intermeidates before going * however my friend did a few Intermediates, then did Hartpury * last year and then went on to run again over some more Intermediates this year to go **.

To be honest after walking the course at Houghton last weekend, I could really see the difference in the Intermediate fences and a one *.

Thanks everyone - as I was posting this I had a thought in the back of my mind that they had changed the rulebook, but this is always the place to make sure

I shall talk to my friend who will be riding him and get her proposed programme for the season, and I will suggest she does a couple of intermediates at least. Hope he behaves himself now

In 2005 I had originally planned to do a 2 day Novice but then all of the CCI's started dropping the roads & tracks and the chase. I took the decision that if I was never going to do these at a CCI then why bother at a 2 day. I just did the 1 intermediate and got my qualifying score. For me the plan was always just to complete the CCI*. Most of the horses that are competitive at CCI* have done well at intermediate. I hope your plans work out.

I have done a 2 day to qualify and may do an intermediate novice before Blair but not an intermediate, think it depends on your horse. The Int route is cheaper but 2 day fun!!

You need 4 Novices without XC penaties, and either a clear at a N2D or a clear round an Intermediate

Dependant on which 1* you are going for would depend on whether you need your run at Intermediate (some are stiffer than others). My mare did Blair and I think it was stiffer than somewhere like Hartpury!

I did one intermediate to qualify for Hartpury* last year, and ideally would have done another one before I went, but Hector's bloods weren't right when I had him tested, so I ended up not doing anything between Aston on 11 May and Hartpury on 9 August.

It all turned out ok and he was brill at Hartpury, but when I walked the course I thought it was pretty beefy, so I'm glad I had the intermediate run under my belt.
