Advertise the fact you have it on the main gate to the yard? Our yard owner is paranoid about yard security - each stable is alarmed, plus the barn - the alarm will go off when you open any of the doors and the lights come one if you havent turned off the alarm - we have loads of locks on the main gate to yard too - however although on our barn we have a big sign saying 'These premises covered by CCTV' she was wondering if she should also advertise the fact on the main gate - her husband says he thinks that it will just draw more attention to the place - what do you think? We have had a couple of big tack thefts recently locally you see
 
Is the yard advertised at edge of public highway??? if so i would say defo yes, if NOT i would say you would just be advertising for tea leaves to come and have a look at what you have got......... so i would go with YO hubby
 
if it was my yard i would have the signs up because i would like to think it would be a deterent (sp?) against the thieving bar stools. just my opinion...Be interesting to see what everyone else thinks...?
 
The yard is not on a main road at all - country lane and there is a house opposite who do keep their eye on things - I suppose we are lucky than most that we have such security - especially the fact every box is alarmed etc
 
I have a couple of visible cameras on the hay barn and a big sign to say CCTV in operation. The barn is inside the premises though and I haven't had any problems. I'm not sure i'd want to overtly highlight it on the gate though but just MO.
 
The only yard I have ever been on that got raided was the most secure you could imagine. Even the tack room door was steel but guess what they brought a 4 x 4 with huge bullbars and drove their way in and took the lot.

I'm not sure it pays to look too protected cos people wonder what your trying to secure.
 
To be honest CCTV is not much use unless it is up to the police specification so that it can be used as evidence..

I would also ensure that every saddle and bridle is tack marked with the owners post code. This will ensure that if it is recovered by the police that the owner can be identified.
 
I guess the problem with advertising the fact that you have CCTV is that "forwarned is forarmed" so anyone that is that determined to go in, will, regardless of CCTV or not. If they know about the CCTV they will go prepared to either disable it/ cover it up/ wear balaclarvas (spelling?!). That way, they nick your stuff and you have little chance in IDing them. But I guess it could put off some theives? No right or wrong answer I guess!!!

I work for a CCTV company and I think I am right in saying that if there is public access to your yard (as in liveries / farrier / deliveries etc) then by law you have to put up signage saying that CCTV images are being recorded - jolly old Data Protection Act and all that.

Recorded CCTV does have a proven deterent effect (as in the nasties tend to chose a softer target instead) but unless you have it monitored (the images transmitted to a monitoring station so that the Police can be called in the event of an activation) then in the event of a break-in all you usually finish up with is pictures of men in balaclavas taking your stuff.
 
That's what i thought sally2008, re the notifying of the Public.
I wonder though if having signs visible outside the barn/stables would be enough to cover that aspect?
