As you say, if a supposedly independant magazine, once of good journalistic reputation, has to resort to limiting public opinion about a welfare issue, then there really is no hope :(

Time the whole lot was banned, sj hardly has a squeaky clean image with rapping etc

They banned animals in circuses a lot of these horse "sports" look like circuses at this point

And a lot of whats captured is what goes on in public, if they do this in public, what goes on behind closed doors...

Id imagine some of these super wealthy "owners" who have horses with these people have a lot to answer for...

I wonder if he's one of those 'horsemen' who seem to like winding horses up so they can exert their dominance over them. Revolting and not curable.
I suspect he rides very sharp horses rather than winding them up. With that kind of sharp and anxious because if they are like that they will be careful, it often won't go to plan because they are seriously anxious and it's not being resolved well. I think that's pretty awful riding and horsemanship.

The idea that people have created very sensitive, sharp horses simply for the purpose of showing off, essentially, and then cause them harm because they can't or won't ride/manage them sympathetically is just another thing that's really wrong with horse sport.

Agree, what a vile piece of s4it, he is, how can he sleep at night, those poor horses.

This compilation of SJ'er Martin Fuchs was on my FB today :(

I don't like him either, he just won a big competitions, not sure where but he is too tall, gangly and always pulling horses around,

One of his horse was always napping by the entrance and running out, he also had lot of metal in the horse mouth, he was fighting with him all the time...

The Swiss commentators on tv are always raving about him being the best in the wolrd, well i don't think so.

Regarding Martin Fuchs, i have just send the facebook link to the Cavalier Romand, a Swiss magazine, they are always on about
Martin Fuchs being so great.

They probably have the link already but are so annoying with their pink glasses on, they live in another world and seems to hide the head under the carpet,

I have stopped buying their magazine years ago, they just can't see what's going on....

He just won the Aachen Grand Prix, probably the biggest prize in showjumping. To be fair, he rode the 3 rounds really well, and the horse (Leone Jei) is exceptional. I’m not sure you can really criticize him for being too tall or gangly (he’s 6ft and pretty average build for an athlete) as it’s not really something in his control.

His behaviour in this video is appalling, and you would hope that there would be better measures in place to stop it. I can’t see him on the FEi sanctions list, but I don’t know how old the videos are

2019 - present. I must admit to not caring what he has won, aside from the fact that it apparently makes him some kind of role model, albeit one who thinks nothing of walloping his horses' heads with a whip.

I had a little hunt about online for his disciplinary record and couldn't find anything obvious. The rider profiles don't have a section about that, although they do list their superstitions (rather like Pony Magazine might have done) so I've emailed suggesting in light of their commitment to maintaining SLO they might like to add this.

Sad thing is that when I see something like that it makes me wonder what they are capable of doing to e.g. their dogs when in a temper (or even their children if they have any).

It's not called blind rage for nothing. Anger/temper is a dangerous emotion.

I grew up in the 50s/60s with a mother that had anger emotions in spades and spanking/beating wasn't banned then. The horse doesn't have to have actually done anything wrong per se - it can just be that the person is having a 'bad day' and wants a 'cat to kick' with the person/horse/dog being handily available.

Martin Fuchs behaviour is disgusting. I’m sickened.
I remember following a lot of his stuff about Clooney after his injury and his rehab and how much Martin loved him. There were video updates and it was all so lovely.
NOW I feel like I’ve been lied to. Was it all just a PR stunt to detract from how he normally treats his horses?

I agree with you, they made such a song and dance about his love for Clooney....

I am sure he loves his horses deep down but money, sponsors pressure and the ego sometimes get's in the way....

The only rider i like is Steve Guerdat, he seems to have a very strong work ethics and loves his horses, in Switzerland, he is a bit like Charlotte Dujardin was with Valegro
everyone loves him, he has a very strong bond with his horses, horses well being and welfare come first.

Hope that that's really the case, would hate to be disapointed about him too tbh.

Peder Fredricson is my favourite. His empathy for his horses is something else. Most i find i am very disappointed with.

Do we think these riders do love their horses as they say/believe they do?

I personally feel that what they love is what the horse gives them - accomplishment, prizes, feelings of power and strength, achievement. I can't see how they can love their horses and treat them like this.

All of this is really putting me off riding full stop. I'm questioning constantly what am I actually doing it for? I can't watch or listen to top riders advice any more without questioning all of it, what exactly am I working towards if this is how they treat their horses? It all makes me so so sad.

I'm a returning rider, and the ethical issues have troubled me. I've thought about it a lot, and have come to a personal decision. What am I doing it for? Because I love that feeling when it all goes right and you feel as if you are moving with your horse in harmony. I'd like more of that and I think I can get there by making sure I do not annoy the horse. This will involve increasing my fitness levels, working on my posture, and when I am on the horse, making sure my hands are soft and giving and that I don't flop about or kick. That's what I'm doing it for, so I can be a better rider for the sake of the horses I ride.

I totally understand, I'm a dressage rider and I remember watching the Europeans in Aachen, I cant remember the year, sorry, but it was the year that Totilas competed with Rath and was lame. For me, the show was dreadful, a lame Totilas with no judge brave enough to stop the test, and the rider complaining that they didnt get a better mark.... Gal was on that poor horse who was stressed beyond belief and there were a million photos of them "training" with Sven watching and it was painful, I could go on, but I found the show so distressing.

I thought what was I aspiring to if I'm a dressage rider and this is the European Championships of my sport? For a couple of weeks I really struggled with it, and I only hacked out because I couldnt mentally work out how reconcile it all. In the end, I remembered that at the same championship there were some lovely tests, with happy horses and sympathetic riders, it wasnt all awful. Also, I am happy ethically with how I treat my horses, I know I try my best to be the best rider I can be, both mentally and physically, and I try to keep an open mind on ways to train, and I believe I have happy horses who enjoy their work. They have lots of variety in their work, lots of turn out, and in every way I can tell they are happy, and whilst I enjoy competing I'm not very competitive, so I've never felt driven to do anything horrible to achieve competitive success, I've always believed that its not what you achieve, but how you achieve it that matters.

This ended up a bit of an essay, sorry! In essence I dont think it makes us all awful just because some very competitive riders are awful, do your best and listen to your horses, thats all we can do.

That's the best path to take

You will get your reward back a hundred fold one day

I took that path years ago. Let go of trying too hard, listened to what I was feeling from the horse, and doing everything I could to make being ridden a good experience, and it comes back to you, give to the horse and the horse will give to you in ways you never dreamt

I have never had doubts about riding horses, they are a gift that take you to a good place if you give them the chance

It's not them doing it wrong. It's us not knowing how to ask properly
