Well yesterday i took the ginger monster to the coaching development training day at golden cross, and i cant speak highly enough of the trainers or the day itself
grin.gif
This particular day was being taken by Nick Turner and Phillip Surl. Groups A and B (i was in A) were taken all day by Nick, and groups C and D were taken all day by Phillip.

We started with a general friendly upbeat introduction to the day, then Groups A and B went to walk the course set up in the arena. Then Group A rode and B stood with Nick and watched us ride. (then viceversa) The course was fantastic, all very technical but kept low to start with . Few fences but Plenty of tricky lines, angles, corner, skinnies and 101 different possible courses! (dont want to give too much away if other people are going to one of these days!) It was all really interesting and very good for Hattie - couldnt believe how much she has grown up - didnt bat an eyelid at the skinny - no wiggles!! and Nick sussed me out so quickly! he'd recognised all my faults and was brilliant at getting me to work out the problem an giving me possible solutions to correct them
smile.gif
He saw that i was far too focussed on the fence and tending to dictate too much to Hattie in the final strides, so as i came into a line of angled fences he stood several paces to the left of the first one and as i approached the first element he held up his hand and asked me how many fingers he was holding up, then changed them and asked me again so i had to take my focus off the fence - it was a really good exercise for me because it made me realise that as i long as i gave hattie the correct approach, in the final strides it was up to her to clear the fence and not up to me to "strangle" her!! very very useful and great to get ideas from a different trainer

Then in the afternoon Groups A and B did several hours of theory which was sooooo interesting, Nick talked about everything; fitness of the horse (and of the rider

), safety (body protectors and hats), stopwatch use, he used videos to look at the position of famous riders at big venues XC, cooling off horses after the XC, illegal drugs etc etc. there was so much information
smile.gif

It was a really fantastic day, both Phillip and Nick were very approachable and extremely talkative
grin.gif
We have all encouraged them to do more of these days, and also some just theory sessions as they were really useful
smile.gif
im always a little dubious about training days but this has completely changed my views on them, the CDT have done an awesome job and i hope the programme is a huge success and grows and grows so that more people can have the opportunity be taught by these trainers and others on the programme
smile.gif

hope that was helpful and didnt make you doze off

Glad you had a good day

I have a clinic with Nick Turner and Nigel Taylor next weekend so glad to hear you enjoyed it, we also have a theory session in the afternoon so am looking forward to that

sorry no piccies

really need to get some recent ones of Hatts actually, maybe will try and get some at Stilemans (if it isnt cancelled etc etc!!)

It was so worthwhile going and id recommend it to anyone at any level, we had everyone from below intro level to a 3* rider

That sounds like a really good session. I'm with H_J on the clinic at Ely next weekend with Nick so all us HHOers should be trained up and raring to go by 1 March!

Hattikins - didn't realise that was you in the first group. I'm glad that you enjoyed it & a great write up, you must be on commission ! I was in Group B easy to spot as the only male rider. I just wish my mare would chill out a bit.
I am also going to the EHOA clinic next weekend so Nick can have another go at trying to improve me.
Roll on the start of the season.

Yay I'm going to Ely too so I'll be all trained up as well. Can't wait! Is anyone going the day before? It's a long way for me and I've got two horses (though one of them has gravel at the mo... not good!) so I suspect I'll have early times with one of them and need to go the night before. Wouldn't mind going out for a drink if anyone else is doing the same?

Im travelling up on the morning, unless im in the same group as Nats we will have 2 times probably one earlyish! As she is coming with me. Hope its not to early though!

Oh and I hope it isnt too cold! Apart from that am really looking forward to it

Yay, loads of HHOers descend upon Little Downham, what fun! The forum will be inundated with our reports on Monday evening.

It's bound to be cold H_J, it's out on the fens (note to self: hot water bottle and thermals)!

How hilarious!! you know i had the strangest feeling there were HHOers there yesterday!!! so sorry i didnt recognise you!
blush.gif
Your mare is great!! she looks like tons of fun
grin.gif
i just wish i could steal some of her whizzyness and give it to Hattie!! who is the slug of all slugs most of the time!! Maybe our 2 chestnut mares could exchange notes - Hattie giving yours some calmness and yours giving Hattie some turbo fuel!!!

Oh wow, sounds fantastic! I'm off to Moulton College next weekend for my CDT Workshop, and am really excited! I haven't done any BE yet and neither has my horse, but we have a busy season of Intro and hopefully PN planned this year so we will really learn lots at the workshop. So much to take in!

Out of interest, did you take any 'team' with you?! My parents want to come but I wasn't sure if it was acceptable?

Bit worried that everyone else there will be incredible, and I'll be clearly inexperienced and rubbish!

My mum came with me as she has to drive! Cant take my driving test until after may so wont be driving a trailer for a very long time!!

Parents/grooms etc. are allowed to watch all of the jumping but arent allowed to attend the theory side. There are usually 4 jumping sessions which run all day so there will be something for them to watch for the whole day if they wanted to stay while you did the theory part
smile.gif

Dont worry about the level you are at - it suits all levels, in one group there was approx. a 3* rider, with a novice level rider, an intermediate/novice rider, a PN/JRN rider and a girl who had never done anything eventing wise at all - it worked perfectly
smile.gif
Go along, have fun and take in as much information as you can
