Feel the need to point out he’s still the most perfect dog and I firmly believe that if we were in our own house he’d be completely house trained! This damn place is so huge! There’s a good 20 miles between the sitting room and back door (OH’s work!) not complaining usually but i never had issues in our little house where the door was more visible!

Umm, is there any reason you can't tell him off? He might not realise he is doing wrong
It’s because they then associate being told off with doing a poo rather than where they are doing it and this can cause bigger problems, such as not wanting to poo in front of people incase they get shouted at.

We have both of our labs on Calibra Mobility. We did change them to the Calibra Light as we felt they were getting a little rotund. From day one they both presented us with an overnight shite each morning of epic proportions! Unheard of from the day we got them. I quickly got them back on the Calibra Mobility one and they were both all back to normal within 4 or 5 days. We have slightly reduced the amount we give them to try and keep them looking like cat walk models. I think in their case it wasn't a problem with the make of dog food, more an issue with the type and proportion of ingredients, probably just too much fibre for them or something. 🤷‍♀️

Isn’t it weird!
The more I think about it the more I am blaming the food. It has to be.

Mine came with a bag of Skinners puppy food from the breeder and pooped for England on it. I rang Millie’s Wolfheart who were very helpful and I bought sample bags of the two they suggested (riverside mix and rangers mix). She was much better on it but still not great so I moved her onto raw which she did well on but I just don’t have the freezer space for. She’s now on Forthglade wet food and is doing really well on it. I’ve tried a few kibbles as I’d ideally like her to be on a mixture so I can use the kibble for training but we’ve tried MWH again, Forthglade cold pressed, guru cold pressed, bounce & Bella grain free and a few others (no drastic changes. Just starting with a few bits mixed in with the training treats I make and working up to a very small handful mixed in with her food) but it seems she just can’t tolerate kibble. She’s crated overnight so we’ve never had accidents to wake up to but she’s a lot less frantic to out and poo first thing now she’s on the Forthglade. She also wakes me up later (6:30 now which is a welcome change from 5:00) which I think is also down to her being less desperate to go.

Because dogs typically make a link between two previously unrelated stimuli/actions in around 3-5 seconds. Telling a dog off for something it did hours earlier is crazy and useless.
Also, if done just before, during or immediately after, they often make the link 'I must not toilet **in front of that person** and they thus toilet in hiding.

A perfect example, I got out of the shower a few weeks ago and opened the door to complete carnage 😂 Cecil had destroyed a toilet roll and it was everywhere. I did tell him off, not massively but a “ohhh fgs! You little sod” type telling off.
For about a fortnight afterwards he was scared of me getting in or out of the shower!
He’d of course not associated my “arrgggh” with the toilet roll, more the shower!

The pet shop people in my mums village have replied, they sound lovely and super helpful. (And real, there actually is a pet shop there!)
They stock a few types of Millie’s food which is actually pretty good as it helps the decision making!
They said they can order anything in though once I know how often and which I want.

A little update!
I did find and chat to the local suppliers of Millie’s and am/had planned to try it.
It is £50 + a bag which is absolutely fine as he’s so tiny he doesn’t eat much so a bag will last ages, however, I wanted to get my old horses vet bill paid asap and I’ve lost a bit of work recently so decided to get that sorted first.
In the meantime I bought a small bag of Wainrights fish and veg or something food. It was very affordable and I recognised every ingredient as being something I knew!
He seems very happy with it, I still mix a little Butchers tinned into it (a spoonful) simply because Basil will go days without eating and got bony once. A bit of wet food makes him eat and Cec points out it’s totally unfair if he doesn’t have it too 🤦‍♀️😳 (yeah I know, I’m half joking)

Anyhow, to the point. He no longer sh**s on the floor overnight and I only had to go outside with him in the evening two or three times. Now I boot him out and when he asks to come back in they go to bed.
So I conclude, it was the food at fault and Cecelia is still perfect.
