my vet has diagnosed cellulitis in my aged mares back legs. She's currently on Bute to relieve the symptoms, but due to the bad weather and her standing under the trees for shelter, they have blown up again. She is swollen from the hocks upwards and finds it hard to walk at times. Has anyone experienced this and if so what did you find useful? Many thanks in advance

Following this with interest as my mare just been diagnosed with this too today following her getting caught in wire last Thurs afternoon. Cuts weren't bad at all (plain wire) and swelling was initially going down, so we didn't initially get vet at first. She has now had anti inflam and pain killer injection and prescribed bute am and pm with a (?) penn and strep or strep and penn injection for the next five days. Doesn't look particularly swollen, initially the wounds were around the front of the hock and top of cannon bone, today had gone down there but filled in the fetlock. Shes out by day and in at night, but we have let her wander around the yard too to keep moving a bit overnight.

Hope your mare is ok twelve47 and sorry for jumping on your thread - came on to post one asking about people's experiences too and thought it silly to have two.. I wasn't overly worried until my friend said hers had ended up at horspital for 3 nights with it..

I've had this both with a mare and a gelding due to mud fever. A good course of antibiotics, bute, gentle upward massage once less painful to help disperse the fluid and both were right as rain after around 5 days.

Gelding was mild and just one leg up to hock, but mare looked like she had elephantitis in both hinds.

HI Honey08, not a problem jumping on this post as Im glad to hear im not the only one going thru this at the moment :-) Just picked up a course of broad spectrum a/b's and more bute from the vet, so hopefully there will be a result soon. Previously she was on a simple a/b but i think she may have built up some resistance to it. I have her out in the field all the time and her companion keeps her moving round (bless him!!). Last year she had major surgery so we are not too sure if it is related or not as she has no recent wounds. This just flared up for no particular reason. Her bloods came back recently that she was very anemic, so is on iron as well to sort that out. If this doesnt work then I will accept that she's had a great life and as long as shes not in any pain then I will deal with it on a daily basis. I'll keep posting to let you know how things are going. :-)

Hi Nicnac, must try the upward massage for a few days, as only cold hosing at the mo. Cant even get a hand between her back legs as so swollen at the mo! Will keep you posted. Many thanks for the advise.:-)
