My poor mare went out into a new field the other day, only next door and she knows the horses really well.

She went out had a good old run around tail up head held high! Came in with a small cut to the inside of her left hind leg, cleaned it up all was well.. Went back out the next day fine no running around, comes back in with a swollen fetlock :(

She was sound but was swollen so I cold hosed it, after an hour of being in her stable eating her hay I noticed she wasn't putting any weight on the leg, pulled her out and she was lame, so I bandaged the leg and no one on the yard had any bute.

So the next morning I come up take bandages off cold hose very lame so call the vet out, vet comes out says that she is 3/4 lame, he thinks it's cellulitis but he can't be 100% sure he says we have to wait for the swelling to go down, so 5days box rest for miss Maisie, bute and anti bs x2 a day! She's allowed to go on the walker or in hand walking for 20mins a day!

My poor mare is going to go loopy in her stable she's not one to be kept in for long period! Typically tb mare!

Will have to go and get some stable
toys for her or something :(

Here are some photos of her in her new field before she came down lame!

Aw thanks! Yeah there really helping she was started on them last night and I have been up there all morning with her, hosed her leg and walked her out (even though she thought broncing on a lead rope is more fun then walking lol) so she went on the walker but even since yesturday the swelling has gone down loads and not as warm as it was.

She's definatly not as lame as she was yesturday so fingers crossed by the time she comes off box rest shel be fine! Poor mare

Your poor mare! And poor you! Celulitis is not nice to deal with!

Hope she makes a speedy recovery.

P.s. while I understand why vets advise box rest, if the horse can't cope with it mentally, maybe turnout is for the best? Maybe in a small padock with another horse for company?

My old boy was practically dragging his leg at the time.

I was hysterical!

After a few days - when he could move easier, I turned him back out into his field with the other geldings.

Perhaps your vet is cautious incase it isn't cellulitis after all?

Yeah he's cautious, he says he thinks it's cellulitis but can't be for sure until some of the swelling goes down, she's 75% lame and she's the type to go out in small paddock and cause more harm to herself, she settled down today after she had been on the walker, she but she is being quite good really I thought she was going to be a lot worse but will see in a couple of days!

I made a stable toy with a swede, apple and carrots hanging down and when I left she was busy trying to suss it out!

The vet could tell how flighty she is and doesn't want her doing too much on it at the moment, her leg went about 3x the size so have to be careful bless her! Just means shel have to have a good lunge before she goes out or turn her out for a day or 2 before she comes back into work :(

My YM will be there keeping an eye on her as well.

Poor mare feel bad for her!
