Has anyone had any experience of Cellulitis? How long did it last? how long before you started riding again? Anything you did you make it go away faster?

I had it in my hand following a cat bite from a feral cat I was helping - he was in pain.

I was in hospital for 2 days on an antibiotic drip.

I was advised to keep the hand elevated and to move my fingers. Eventually, pus came out of the bite wounds which I found juicy!

I was riding in less than a week.

I was lucky though, I work in a hospital, knew what I had and one of my bosses caught it very early the following day.

Its painful!

I had it in Egypt, combined with a busted ligament. My leg went huge and there were horrible red streaks all the way up to the knee - when I got home my medic mates said the pics were like something out of a textbook! I had a week in the hospital over there, also on a drip and my leg in plaster on one of those hoist things to keep it elevated. I had to take maybe 20 different tablets as well, every hour or so all through the night - being abroad I never actually found out what most of them were. They said had I left it another 24 hours we'd have been looking at septicaemia. It took 3 different hospitals to get an antibiotic that worked. I still have problems with my leg nearly 3 years on, but that's probably more to do with the ligaments than the cellulitis.

Anyway that's all very dramatic - I think if you catch it early, and get UK treatment, it's a lot less serious!

Ironically it was caused by a riding accident, and I don't think I'll be doing much more than happy hacking any more, but again that's probably more ligaments than anything else.

Where do you have it? Hope it clears up soon!

My horse gets it sometimes and needs quite a lot of antibiotics to get over it, bran mash with some epsom salts can help as well but antibiotics should clear it even if you have to try different types , as we did last time

Ha ha how stupid am I! This is the veterinary section after all...
as far as I know, antibiotics are the only thing that will clear it but maybe you could try a supplement to boost the immune system, might speed recovery along.

It came up on Saturday morning /maybe during the night and I got the vet out sat lunchtime and gave him strong antibiotics. he's on a 5 day course of powdered antiboitics which finish tomorrow morning. Yesterday his hind leg was down a lot and I hacked him out gently and he was fine. I was wondering whether to do a bit more with him today to help with his circulation and reduce the swelling and speed up recovery.

My gelding got cellulitis around his knee after receiving a kick to it. It was very large like an elephants leg

and he had 5 days of antibiotics and bute and it did take nearly 3 weeks to go down and he had localised swelling for over a month around the area of the kick. The vet said it was an infection which was in the tissue surrounding the area of the kick.

I started riding after 3 weeks but he was out 24/7 so could keep the leg moving. Wasn't much else I could do to speed recovery up.

Hope he gets better soon.
