Central heating/open fires

I have oil fired central heating and a wood burner - due to changing jobs I can't afford the oil at the moment so it will be the wood burner for a while - still it keeps the sitting room toasty and it's only a small cottage which is now double glazed and the roof replaced and insulated which helps. I have a small fan heater in the bathroom which keeps that warm enough and an electric blanket on the bed.:)

I will get oil asap to keep that cold damp feeling away.:)

But surely you need to have some oil to run the boiler for hot water?

We have the put the central heating on for only the last week or so - just 2 hrs in the morning and 2 or 3 hrs in the evening.

We have a multifuel burner in the sitting room, but usually only have that on at the weekend.

Ours is set to come on in the mornings and evenings if the house temp is <19 degrees and it's clicked on every day for the last few weeks :)

Why do so many people have open fires? Most of your heat (and money) is going straight up the chimney so why not use an inset fire or a log / multifuel stove instead? These will run at 80% plus effiiciency and even up to 90% for the best compared to 25% for an open fire. In other words you get more than 3 times the heat for the same amount of fuel. Apart from the money, it saves so much effort carrying fuel into the house.

Made me laugh, you sound like you are advertising for a woodburner manufacturer. I actually work for a company who makes woodburners and I admire your passion for them :)

For the avoidance of doubt, I have no connection with any manufacturer.

Well we do have 3 (a Dovre and 2 Clearviews) as well as a Stovax inset. They do a great job of heating our 7 bed farmhouse along with the Aga. We do have oil central heating as well but the wood burners do most of the work.

Since our wood is free apart from the chain saw fuel we are now looking at adding a log gasifying boiler as well.

Ohhh, clearviews, your posh :) I have a villager stove in my tiny barn conversion and it heats the place a treat. No other form of heating needed. I do actually love it but not the mess it creates. Plus find it a pain to keep going, etc but soo cheap especially if your wood is free. I actually work for probably the only other big woodburning manufacturer not mentioned on here so when I can eventually afford to buy somewhere at least I can get one on the cheap.

SHUT-UP all of you!!!!!!

The log fire has dwindled to nothing and the central heating won't fire.

Don't know about you guys but it's bloomin' freezing here today!
