Can someone help me as I am totally beyond confused.
Having read up on things, to transport horses I need two things:

A certificate of competence and a drivers authorisation type 1 certificate.

Now.. Where on earth can I get these/do these because whilst the websites happily tell me I need them nowhere tells me where to go!

Help!!!

DEFRA?

I did mine some time ago and still have the plastic card although the writing has rubbed off and is now totally illegible.

More bureaucratic nonsense.

a certificate of competence either do up to 8 hours or over 8 hours. upto 8 is electronic test , over 8 is a test and a practical. then apply for an operator licence with defra to transport animals for reward. not sure of anything after that. then insurance

You need to contact the racing schools either Doncaster or Newmarket as they regularly do the tests

You need to apply to DEFRA up at Carlisle and get your DEFRA authorisation, now you need to decide whether to do Type 1 or type 2

Once you have done that you need to see what you are using for transport

Please do not say a tinpot 2 box as there are so many of them about and loads of horses died as a result of these conversions! There is a lot of pressure from the transport investigators about getting these off the roads.

DVSA love them as they are always over weight and the drivers NEVER stick the the Domestic Rules which they are supposed to and carry their log book ALL the time!

If doing trailer transport you need to see if your combined weight and that includes the load EVERY TIME does not take you over 3.5t if it does you need an operators licence from DVSA

If driving a lorry over 3.5t again you will need an operators licence.

If you have gone for the Type 2 which is really the only licence to have then your vehicle needs to be inspected by the 3 authorised companies by DEFRA which include Fans, temperature monitoring and GPS recordable, ramp angles as well come into play.

Once you have done all the above then get hire and reward insurance NFU are the very best at this

You then need public liability, employer liability if you are going to allow passengers, and care custody and control.

Lycetts are fabulous for this

Check out your competition as there are some silly idiots transporting for 10p a mile just to undercut the competitors! Whilst your clients think they are getting a cheap bargain this really means poorly maintained vehicle, not sticking to driver hours and going over their 8 hours when they are type 1 they CANNOT BE NATIONAL TRANSPORT only local!

Having been out there for over 25 years we have picked up some shocking attempts at 'horse transport' usually injuring horses going through rotten floors and the worst so far was a 'conversion' job where the ponies had actually come out the sides of the tin pot 2 box! Shocking!

Information is on the DEFRA website for you to download all the forms

Same on DVSA

I wanted to get into this business earlier this year but decided to put it on hold.
I have a 3.5 very smart well maintained 1200 payload. I am always strict with my payload if taking a friend with my own and making them travel separate with tack to save 100kg approx. It is not worth the risk to the horses or vehicle being overweight. I wanted to charge a pound a mile and a fiver standing but surprisingly when discussing with other people on the farm they said I was too expensive at a fiver an hour?! Others said they could self drive one for 35 a day. As a driven transporter I would have been professional and provide and excellent service but people just seem to look at the pound signs....

Hi there, i am in the process of starting a small pony/horse transport business. This has been on hold for sometime and with the CV19 even more. But i have a Cheval Liberte Trailer which is ten years old. But will be going into our local garage that specialises in this to be refurbed. I want everything to be perfect and legal for the safety of the horses i will be transporting as well as my own. What you have written here is most helpful as it is a minefield! So Thankyou, i now know where to start. I know that your post was some years ago, but any information you can supply would be greatly appreciated.

It’s not really advised to use a trailer to run a transport business (I’ve been running a company for 8 years).

Its also a very saturated industry at the moment, too many cheap companies around doing stuff illegally.

I know one transport company locally that use a trailer. the company is very highly thought of and gets lots of repeat business.

But I would say her trailer and towing vehicle are pretty new and high quality.
