as we, well those of us who have our own lorries/trailers etc will need to get this cert., i was wondering how this affects say, "joe public" when hiring a "self-drive" lorry or a "self-tow" trailer?

will they too need to produce this cert. before hiring such vehicles?

have googled/asked jeeves...to no avail........................

B&J whispers asking what this certificate of competence is. Have I been in la la land and missed something?

just looked this up.... JM07 had worried me too!

Transport of Animals by Road certificate of competence:
If you transport or attend to horses during transit as of January 2008 then you will need to hold this certificate if there is any form of economic gain.

This includes:-

Polo transport and yards
Private persons with their own horses and receiving any kind of sponsorship
Traditional professional commercial horse transporters and their staff
Studs with their own horseboxes and staff attending to horses
Freelance horsebox drivers and grooms

I dont think it will affect self drive hire companies as they dont do the driving and the driver (you) will not make any economic gain!

thats what i make of that though, correct me if im wrong!

Doesn't this depend on how you define sponsorship? If Mum pays livery fees or OH helps out in a difficult month, am I sponsored? If I compete my friend's horse, is she sponsoring me? Or does this only relate to commercial sponsorship?

Is this any help?

Is it right, that you don't need a C of C if you are travelling them under 65km, even if you're a commerical unit?

The box drivers at work had to do this test a few weeks back, looked v. easy and I was just amazed at yet another piece of red tape that has to be jumped through by a clearly competant company. At the end of the day when you are driving millions of pounds worth of Thoroughbred around in a lorry that is always kept upto date with its compulsory inspections, even taken off the road when a bulb blows until the transport people and DEFRA agree it is safe and the driver always has a competant member of horse staff with them then taking this test it irrelevant.

No you dont, the defra website also states the exceptions

The Regulation does not apply to the transport of animals:

Where the transport is not in connection with an economic activity; or
Transport to or from veterinary practices or clinics under veterinary advice; or
When the animal is an individual animal, is accompanied by its owner or other responsible person and is fit for the intended journey; or
Where the animals are pet animals accompanied by their owner on a journey.

so my pet horse is fine!
