Half way through and yes very good, worth reading! He puts so much emphasis on how balanced you are as a person and in your life as to what issues your dogs have.
I'm currently reading "be a pack Leader". very interesting how, as SevernMistletoe says, he focuses on the handler and their mind set and character traits.

No but I think hes brilliant, but then a lot of the numpties he deals with should be banned from dog ownership for life!

Totally agree with you! He is on TV (never re-runs) in our country every night so have seen soooo many programmes of his over the past few years. He is absolutely amazing in my opinion - no other trainer that I have ever seen or heard of, even comes close to him. He has an intuition that so many people can only dream of.
How in the world he deals with all these numpties is beyond me; these buffoons who make silly noises and shrill sounds to try to get their dogs to come to them
, those who are obviously doing the wrong thing by allowing behaviour to escalate
, and those who reward their dogs for being over exuberant and not paying any attention to what the handler is asking. I do enjoy his dry sense of humour though!
I am lucky enough to not having to read the books as the programmes are abundant here and I'm also naturally his way inclined so my girls are all wonderful as somehow I have always brought my dogs up in the same fashion as him.
Me me me!! I just finsihed Be the Pack Leader and i thought it was great, it makes so much sense and i wish I had found it years ago (did read Jan Fennell which is good but I much prefer Cesar (and he's nicer to look at!)). The case studies are great and his philosophy about being calm and assertive is something I think a lot of people could use in their day to day lives. Great book and definatly reccommend it!
Possibly controversial opinion - but am not a massive fan of him...
Sometimes I think he uses very bullying techniques - you could achieve the same without resorting to those methods.
I'll give an example - I watch his prog the other day - one dog he sorted so well - what he said made loads of sense and I thought he did a fab job. All the stuff about rewarding when you have the good calm behaviour etc - not re-inforcing the negative behaviour. Also working with the pack etc.
The other dog was a JRT - he put a prong collar on it and jabbed it everytime he wanted it to stop - the dog screamed in pain. Was nasty to watch... Yes it was effective - but isn't that just a 'quick fix' way of sorting a problem? I don't doubt that it works - but couldn't he have achived that correction without that level of force? Isn't that lazy dog training?
Just my ponderings tho. He clearly knows about dog communication.
i'm tempted to agree with widget (please dont shoot me)- i worry when the public watching his programme will try to recreate his methods and i feel he promotes choke chains etc which you will not find in any good training club.
I agree with his calm and consistent method of training but worry how some people confuse assertion with agression. I personally don't agree with having to 'dominate dogs' and have seen people throwing their dogs down on the ground on their backs and holding them by their necks because they have seen it on his programme.
However, as above, i'm not saying he isn't a fantastic dog behaviourist and doesnt know what he's saying.
