My horse has been on Alfa A Oil for years and I've never had a problem with it. Recently i changed his feed slightly, I moved him from mix onto Topspec cubes & balancer which he looks fab on. But now he is leaving a fair bit of chaff in the bottom of his bucket. To be fair the past 2 bags I've bought have been slightly finer chopped/ dusty looking. I'm not sure if he's bored of the alfa a or if its the change in texture/ look (finer etc).

He is also has a small scoop of sugarbeet which moistens his feed. But if the finer bits of chaff are mixed in with the sugarbeet at the bottom of his bucket then he won't touch it.

Any suggestions anyone? Should i change his chaff? If yes then what to?

Oh he has his teeth done a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks. Cookies if you get through all that

. Also on SY

I thought my last bag of alfa oil was very dusty, but mine are piggies so they eat it all up anyway

I have started to change them over to SS Lucie Stalks now as there's no oil or anything in them ( but mine are all natives)
I can't stand all of these chaffs that are made up with straw/mollasses and all sorts of other unneccessary things

You could always leave the chaff out and feed unmollassed beet the cubes/balancer and add your own oil

Its funny you should say that as a horse we had went off Alpha A for no apparent reason he just refused to eat it. We changed to another chaff and he was quite happy. Only yesterday a friend had mentioned the same problem. Could they have changed somthing about the composition, different oil? I use Top specs Top chop now which is a minty flavour and not oily which I think is what puts them off.

I was going to sugest that perhaps the mix was adding sweetness too / diluting the taste of the Alfa and now thats gone he's not liking it so much... mine prefers his alfa with a bit of mint and garlic added...

poppymoo I'm not suprised your horse is scoffing the lot Cherry show shine its 12% sugar

I think horses are like kids, once they have the taste of sugary things there's no going back LOL!!
