Oh yes, the dangers of feeding chaff, not just the sugar content but all the other stuff in them that isn't listed on the bag and y you only see if you visit the manufacturer's website and search for it.

I specifically told my previous YO and her husband not to feed my horse any chaff, haylage or compound feed, or any supplements I hadn't provided, because she headshakes violently on high sugars, but they decided she wasn't fat enough (they like gross show "condition" in their horses), they lied about it and secretly fed her two of the chaffs in that list, before I caught them at it ?

The interesting thing is there are 2 types of chaff in the top third.

One is the straw with molasses option like Mollichaff; the other is grass nut and chaff which has nothing added but like fresh grass is naturally high in sugar.

I feed a couple of handfuls of chaff to bulk out my girl's tiny speedibeet dinner, which she only has to get her supplements in. She won't eat masses of it because its so boring (Top Chop Zero) but it's low sugar. I tried putting a bucket of it out, to give her something to nibble on when she ran out of soaked hay, but she ignored it, I think it tastes like cardboard! ?

Have composition rates changed at all since the list was posted? Honeychop list their Lite & Healthy as 3.1% total sugar, the chart has it as 5.5%.

I would have been beyond furious. How dare someone decide to feed your horse against your instructions. Did you move yard?

How interesting! My lad was a bit of a head shaker, owner said it was flies/allergies and only happened in summer. He was fed applechaff and a mix, but only very irregularly not daily. When I got him I had a bag of thunderbrooks herbal chaff to use up and a nose net but his head shaking significantly decreased. I then got a bag of my usual hifi molasses free and it occurs to me he hasn’t shaked in about a month or more now. I assumed it was a mix of the allergies and flies being more under control but perhaps it’s something to do with this!

I’ll be watching closely over the first few weeks of haylage feeding ?
